It should be noted that before this topic was made the search bar was used, and while similar topics were found it was mostly composed of which was right or wrong or a series of bickering posters laying out half truths and incomplete facts of why the other one was wrong, eventually devolving into flame war fuel. This is not about who is right and wrong because being trapped in the middle of such mind sets(which I hope the majority of us are or else we really are doomed) I am sick of religious extremists telling me I'm going to hell and am most certainly tired of anti-religious extremists telling me that I'm stupid as hell(no pun there) for believing something simply because we can't put it under a microscope or don't understand it. As I hope most of you realize neither religion or science are natural tools for destruction or what we call "evilness" so I ask if one was to prevail over the other what is the worst that could happen? Example 1: If religion ruled global wars would ensure and massive loss of human life would plague the planet. Example 2: If science ruled we would genetically modify organisms like crazy until one of them proved too much for us and began to spread over the planet creating famine, disease and drought. Note that these are just examples! Feel free to add your own notes of how one or both would kill us if it was dominant. Also DO NOT go on about how one would be perfectly fine without the other because as we all know its HUMAN NATURE to screw things up no matter what the situation is as our entire history as shown as again and again. Oh and one last thing is that when I say that one will prevail over the other I don't mean that if religion prevails that we will go back to using leeches or if science then we will all become mindless drones, I simply mean that our decisions will now be solely affected by the other from now on.

And no I won't use "paragraphs" simply out of principal.

I know this is kind of a religous vs (blank) thing but you get the most interesting thoughts from them I find. And like I said up in my text wall its not about religion vs science... Its about what kind of destruction we face if one did not accompany the other or indeed what we will eventually face.

THIS THREAD IS ABOUT HOW EACH OF THE TWO(OR THREE) OPTIONS WILL CAUSE THE WORLD TO END.

I voted for both, religious extremists abuse science and nuke the earth to bits. More interesting.

How about bits of both
The wrong bit of science and the insane illogical bits in religion
We can keep the morals of religion and the logic of science

See it isnt religion that is bad. Its the outcome because religion basically tells you that you can do anything towards this planet and then die knowing happily that even if your future generations have it worse than you. Its only a temporary housing until you go to heaven but then again this makes me wonder why you have figured that we will wipe out humanity with either of these extremes.

"For evil to prevail all it needs is that good men do nothing."

basically your doing nothing, we are all doing nothing because thats what the system has told us to do.

A system where making a decition means consulting everyone and then let the majority decide and even then most of the majority who are healthy have oppinions, money, positions that favour a different choice so you never get the majority and thus cant change anything.

"Democracy, a choice only in the illusion. The only thing it is good at is doing nothing."

will mankind end ? No, never. We have our downs but trough the ashes. Good men who did something will prevail. Thats why you should get married, and have children. Educate them and throw them into the antfarm of whatever country you are. Because the more the merrier.

This one is a no-brainer for me. Always go with Science.

Although I don't think science should be used to disprove religion, since religion is about faith anyway, not proof and im happy to leave the religious to believe in afterlife and God as long as they stay out of the way of scientists and their endavours.

Oh and yes, I don't have ANY problem at all with genetic engineering, cloning, stem-cell research or effectivisation of abortions. These diciplines should, in my opinion, be pursued a lot more, and the opinions of religious people shouldn't be allowed to interfere with science.

It is never the job of the faithful to save the rest of us from hell...

I am unsure, seeing as if we choose religion we can go to war with whoever we want and convince everybody it's the right thing by saying "God said so" or "God is on our side" or "they probably worship Satan". Likewise with science, with their "we are smart so we are right" kind of thing. I've seen some of the surveys "scientists" dedicate time to carrying out, and these are truly the most pointless, boring surveys in existence.

I vote that the OP split his text into paragraphs. The 'Enter' key exists for a reason.
Im with kilgore on this one. Also a religious versus thread? Tisk tisk.
At least it's semi-original, and not necessarily flame-war inducing... yet.

Damn Confernal, I think you've hit it perfectly - both have the potential to fuck up and kill us.

Coinicidentally, that's what I voted :p The science parts of Exit Mundi [http://www.exitmundi.nl/exitmundi.htm] are most fun, though :)

You seem to forget the problems of over crowding, which we are in fact beginning to witness the first symptoms of today. It's only gonna get worse with starvation disease and minimal viable living space if mankind continues to procreate like the vermin it is.

So I don't agree with you when you say: "the more the merrier". In fact, the world seriously need to cut back on the babybooming, if we want mankind to survive for the next 200 years.

Both. Science doesn't recognize how dangerous it is in the hands of religious zealots, and religion doesn't realize the consequences of using the science to achieve their goals. Basically, ignorance wins.

The most noted scientists in history were religious.

Georges Lemaître for instance. He worked the fields of cosmology and astrophysics, but was also a Catholic priest.

Science.
I'm keeping my answer short, so I don't start to rant and start a flamewar...

Both. I believe in science, but faith keeps me happy. So I won't fall into depression from knowing that death will come and that's it.
