Poll: Religious Discussion on the Escapist - your thoughts!

The problem is that you can't have religious debate without someone feeling that others are pushing their beliefs. This always ends in a messy bout of angst. You can't phrase your exact intentions on the internet and so it all ends in misunderstanding and rage.

I did think about this when writing and you have a good point. But I do still think that it is possible to keep it clean.

i.e. Me: I believe in Jesus! Atheist: I don't believe in anyone! Me: Thats cool.

The sad thing is that a lot of Churches give false impressions...if anyone is familiar with the WBC that is a good example.

That is the truth; most Christians aren't like those freaks.

I still disagree with them (though not out loud) on most issues, but they hold their own, just as I hold mine. I can respect that.

I chose none of them. I like religious debating because it's good for a laugh. Especially when "The Sword" comes up.

Or the fanatics from the other side don't start telling everyone that there is no god and that people who do not share that belief are stupid and are wasting their lives. The fundamental problem is one extreme (the anti-religious extreme) is accepted while the other is not. Neither side should be tolerated.

Yea, i was just too lazy to type it out. But if they can base everything with facts and keep it civil i don't mind.

The problem with that is we can't really use fact as a basis of discussion for religion or spirituality, it all comes down to belief. Being a non-theistic Pagan I can get behind the general idea of chatting about metaphysics and spirituality. The problem for me is when people start screaming at each other and demanding proof for things they know can't be proved and indeed don't require proof for someone else to believe. This basically occurs when one side decide that the other side is wrong and needs to be brow-beaten into being right, basically the forum equivalent of a Jehovas Witness who behaves in a considerably more insulting manner.

The other problem for me is certain people (there are 4 on this board at least) demand proof for things which can be proved, then completely disregard and ignore that proof when it is presented, then proceed to continue on with their bigoted hate speeches.

If there's one thing I know about religion is that is does not suffer arguments with it kindly.

I don't like it when people fight about religion and politics. You should be able to have a proper discussion and talk civilly if you want to discuss religion. And if you don't want to discuss it then don't and you shouldn't be pushed into discussing it if you don't want to.

I have a friend who is constantly talking about equality for everybody and how she believes everybody can have their own views, yet she's so opinionated that she believes that when it comes to politics or religion or anything related, she's ALWAYS right. And she argues with everybody and it pisses people off. Her main argument is if you don't believe what she believes your stupid.

That bugs me but if people want to have normal and civil discussions it's up to them and as long as nobody is flaming I think it's fine.

well i am a pastafarian, as you may have noticed, and as a result i tend to find these discussions strangly entertaining. but i have not noticed any fellow members of my church on this thread, but if there are i would find there opinion interesting.
