I voted no, ingame advertising will never cover the costs that running a mmo run up

Do you honestly think blizzard would get (15x£9/$18) about £135,000,000 per month from ingame advertisements? also if all games switched it would be that things like the economy would start to affect which games we can and carn't play even moreso than it does now

Stop wanting everything for free/someone else to pick up the cost for you, bum
Just look at television, they are constanly broadcasting material to a global audience in the billions and do it 24/7. If a 20 second commercial can sustain that kind of giant then a loading screen with products on it could surly sustain an online game.
Theres ALOT more people who watch TV compared to how many play WoW, also adverts on TV are placed right in the middle of programs people want to watch, would you like your game to pause for 5 minutes every 30 just so you can play for free? even then it wouldn't make sense from a business point of view because mmo's are a cliche market as it is and advertising in one would be very tricky.

How many people played BF2142 and decided to go out and buy a intel CPU or go watch I AM LEGEND just because they might have noticed the billboard while they were sniping somebody in the face do you think?

The irony of most pc gamers makes me laugh my ass off, half of you cry up in arms when somebody wants to curb a certain type of game or remove certain bits of content, yet you demand MMO's to have obtrusive ad's just so you can play them for free?

You yourselves will be the downfall of pc gaming if ever there will be one, mmo's are the only market consoles havnt nailed yet and its all because pc gamers are used to getting 'EVERYTHING I WANT, HOW I WANT IT WAAA WAA' while console gamers just get on with it, i payed for my computer, i pay for my mmo's... they both provide me with entertainment so who cares how little it costs?

This is a bad idea on par with being beaten to death by goats.
It'd completely kill any immersion factor, for one.
MMMORPGs have immersion? Also, it'd be worth killing the immersion in exchange for the game having a semi-reasonable price.
For two, can you imagine billboards advertising Coke in Warhammer Online?
No, no you cannot.
Well actually I could, and it's a lot easier than imagining someone paying 144$ a year at best for one fucking game.

Nope. I would happily pay than see adverts in game.

Maybe its just people with more money than sense
Or maybe they just dont like adverts. It doesnt matter who does them they're still annoying as hell.

And to say that people who spend £8.99 a month to play a game have more money than sense... shut up.
You do know how much 9$ a month is at the end of the year right?? A lot.
Or you could spend $9 in 20 minutes at mcdonalds or starbucks or w/e and that makes who have the least sense?

Bottom line is;
Grow up, nothing in life is free.
Ingame adverts will never catch on, don't like it DONT PLAY IT.
You will never have a say in the matter, boo hoo.

Fin.
This is the perfect example of one of those people ^^

The obvious thing to do is to have both. Go to the supermarket's magazine rack and note how thick the women's magazines are. Keep in mind that over half of that is advertising. All costs for producing the magazine are covered by the advertising. Yet they still charge $5 per issue at the newsstand. This is why subscriptions are so cheap (around $1.50 per issue). They can afford to be.

So, the obvious business decision would be to have ads and still charge people a monthly fee. Whether something like this would work for a MMO remains to be seen. People are used to free stuff from the internet. So such a thing won't happen overnight. but in time, when everyone has in-game ads and a monthly fee, it will just seem like it's always been that way.

they should not, as then the games wouldnt fix any glitches, bugs, or OPness until next expansion. there is fees on games for a few reasons

1. it allows the developers to update the game frequently
2. most games with a fee is more than worth playing (insert WOW here)
3. without a fee, the games would be a lot lower on the Quality scale.

I think I'd rather not play a game than watch ads pop up in it.
So much for the chance of games being consider as a legitimate form of art in the future.

Put expenses into prospective, how much do you pay per month for:
1. cable TV?
2. eating out at McDonalds or restaurants?
3. tickets and food at movies, sports or concert arenas?
4. games for console and pc?
5. phone services, do you have a cell phone?

If you don't pay for any of the above then you are right. $9.95 is a lot to pay per month for entertainment and communication.

If you want to play a MMO for $9.95 then give up or cut down on one of the following. Definitely worth it in my opinion. No advertising!

If you wouldn't notice it then it wouldnt be advertising.

Please think before you post, no wonder you're on probation.

Try to picture Middle-Earth filled with adverts for modern-day products and tech, in LotR:Online. No, it wouldn't work. Even Hellgate London had adverts, it sure didn't work too good for them.

Im on probation for starting a flame war

I believe its you that needs to do some thinking

Have you read any of this?
Nuka cola... blatant coca coal advertising
but its didn't break the immersion did it?

Think on.

I would perfer adds if there was an option to turn them off and on during game-play but in loading screens on all the time then I would be extremly happy! And it would be a cool feature if the players would be able to make money off this like there charcter having a advert for coke on their cape and geting a small presentage oh what they make on that compony's adverts then life would be great. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh but that will probobly never happen but we can dream..............

It's a double-edged sword, let me give an explain my reasons:

Matrix Online was playing around with in-game advertising within the city by way of billboards, ok...i have no problems with that, in fact it made the city feel more 'real'...after all we all see these signs when were driving in a real city so..sure why not?

The problem was three-fold however, first is was mostly Warner Bros. that was advertising, since they published the game i doubt they were actually paying anybody to post them..second they had no real intention of dropping the monthly payment, and third the population of MxO was never really big to begin with so it really failed to draw in any other companies willing to advertise.

But in that setting it would work, especially MxO since it's supposed to be the 'real', having Pepsi or Burger king ads just seems to fit.

WoW is a different matter, i'm certain they could get a ton of in game ads, but some gamers would object to, let's say, Pepsi throwing in ads because it would take away from the overall experience.

In the end i suppose it would depend on the game, a MMO in a modern-day setting of Earth i believe would warrant this type of advertising, but it a fantasy setting? not so much.

No they shouldn't remove them, as it is the only thing that keeps the RuneScape kids out.

So what did people make of "Nuka cola" adverts in fallout 3, they have adverts for Coca Cola, if anything they just made the game more intresting
Erm Nuka-Cola goes way back to the first Fallout, it is not a Coca-Cola ad in any way, shape, or form...yes it has the same bottle shape but that's where it ends.

That's like saying that the Corvega commerical on the T.V during the Fallout intro is a commerical for the Corvette, it may look a bit like a Stingray and have a similar name but that where it ends.

Fallout takes place in the future with a 1950's art-deco flair, obviously they're going to use cars that look like Cadilliac's and drinks that look like Coca-Cola, that doesn't mean they're advertising either one.

F3 used Nuka-Cola because it's part of the Fallout world, to have it omitted would've been a crime to the series.

Heh, someone is taking it a little too seriously :p

£8.99 a month is £107.88 anyone with good taste and some sense would spend that on different things

someone with more money than sense would spend it on an subscription that they probably wont get there moneys worth from

besides, well done adverts aren't annoying
£8.99 a month really isn't that much and £107 a year definitely isn't that much. On that note you really dont have to do much in an mmo to feel like its £8.99 well spent.

Anyway i'm now going to ignore you. Have fun with your trolling.

What if they just had commercials? Maybe while you're loading a new map, or realm, or before boss fights. That would be okay with me.

THE POINT BEING

Even if it did have nothing to do with coca-cola
The point is that if it WAS coke it wouldn't ruin the atmosphere
