As much as I know free is good, I'd prefer to pay for my servers. I hate advertisements. I play games to get away from the reality of life. Not to listen to more of life's bullshit. Lets just put it this way, if the game is geared around adult entertainment than keep that shit outta there.

Also, think about it this way if most adults really hate putting up with advertisements. Why would games really want to offer free servers with a butt load of advertisements. If the people are not paying for the server itself why would they put the money into there advertisers? Think about it paying games you pay 5-$15 a month for. Thats estimate $0.16- $0.50 a day, what do you spend $0.16-$0.50 a day on and how long does that last you?

Forget your daily machine pop/soda! Water is better for ya anyways hahahaha!

The pay to play games keep most of the battle.net kiddies the hell out of them (somehow WoW seems to be the exception) and I'm more than willing to pay the tax to keep them out.

Still not entirely practical. Even though you'd stop paying the costs of running/moderating/bugfixing the servers would remain. It would also mean that as server traffic increased with more loyal players, the amount of money coming in would go down.
And games like Everquest (10 years now it's been running) that run mostly on long time subscriptions would be dead by now.

Whatever is free is ok...
As long as I don't hear the word "pay" outside the gameplay you can put whatever you want in there. Heck - put my mother naked in there, if it's free!

HOooray, Someone who thinks like I do..... except the mother part.

I don't like in-game ads, but having them in a game launcher and/or as a pop up after you quit the game seems like a good idea to me. It could at least replace some of the fee...

I voted no, ingame advertising will never cover the costs that running a mmo run up

Do you honestly think blizzard would get (15x£9/$18) about £135,000,000 per month from ingame advertisements? also if all games switched it would be that things like the economy would start to affect which games we can and carn't play even moreso than it does now

Stop wanting everything for free/someone else to pick up the cost for you, bum

depends how they do it. if the game stops and stuff pops up then no but putting sings on walls in the game then absolutely. especially if it's a funny bill board or something.

Just look at television, they are constanly broadcasting material to a global audience in the billions and do it 24/7. If a 20 second commercial can sustain that kind of giant then a loading screen with products on it could surly sustain an online game.

While it sounds really good i dont think its doable, and/or fittable on most games. Example imagine playing WoW chillin in Undercity and having a Life insurance company advertising, " don't Let this be your final resting place" , i mean if its free awesome, byt that would mean more monopolizing for big companies.

I think Free and MMO will never truly meet. There will always be either a subscription or micro transactions to make sure the player forks out.
Guild Wars - they use an interesting concept that minimizes costs. (I'm not 100% sure about how it works, but apparently it has something to do with players only being able to meet each other in cities, not outside. As soon as you leave town, you get like some sort of your own copy of the map.)

About the advertisements: Not only would you have ads during load/login times, you'd also have to replace all the texture of the games with advertisement. Maybe you're overestimating the amount of money you can get from this sort of thing - practically, it's not possible to run an MMO solely on ads. I think someone would've done it already if it was.

If it were possible, sitting through a minute or two would be a small price to pay instead of 15.00 a month..

I don't care if i have to pay, I would never want a good game to have advertising in it, there is enough advertising in the world, games ar e about the only thing anymore that does not have advertising in it.

I would gladly sit through 2 or 3 mins of adverts after I had finished a quest or something

or it could be your punishment if you die :p

xD Your death penalty = 2 Coca Cola commercials and 1 Sham-Wow! commercial.

Nah, I just think it'd be great on loading screens and when booting up the game.

That will never happen. At most they will get some money from it and if they're considerate enough they might lower the price for it, but why would they not want to get more money in their pockets? The only reason I think they would do if they started advertisement in-game is to lower monthly fee to attract players into it. That would be a good idea as long as the advertisement doesn't get annoying as hell.

Maybe a loading screen and some... stuff somewhere, depends on the game-lore if it allows signs around and what kind.

haha yeah that would be good :p such motivation not to die! and the companies pay more for adverts against harder enemy's because more people would die there!

I wouldn't mind seeing some advertising actually in the game, for instance in WoW or something, like a bunch of dwarfs drinking old fashioned budwiser from from tankers :p
