I dont get it. It seems everyone and their dog likes to play a game more than once, and I simply dont get it. Once you've finished a game you know the story and you know whats going to happen, so why bother? Its the same reason I dont read books more than once or generally dont watch movies more than once. Its just boring once you know whats going to happen.

So whats the deal? Why does everyone enjoy playing through the same game more than once?

I've been trying to platinum a few games lately (inFAMOUS being my current one,) so I've found myself replaying titles quite a bit.

Other titles that don't have much replay value generally don't get another look from me, but my main reason for replaying would have to be for getting my money's worth.

Same with me except in certain instances. With some games, it's more about the gameplay than the story; take Bayonetta for example. I played that well over 7 times and put 60+ hours into the game. It's damned fun.

Other games, people just plain enjoy enough that they can play it more than once and still enjoy it; it's all about how much you enjoy the game or how much fun the game is.

And with rewatching movies or rereading books, half the time it's likely to refresh one's memory, but really if you like it enough that's all it takes. I just finished up an 18 hour NGE marathon where I watched the entire anime series and all 4 movies in a row... totally worth it. No way in hell I'd do that if I didn't like the anime so much.

Usually I wait a while before replaying a game, unless it has a heavy morality/choice system and I'll go back and make all the other choices. Or if it's just really, really awesome I'll just restart because I didn't want it to end.

I dont really get that argument either. Dragon Age was one of the best games I've ever played, and I actually started on a second playthrough. Never got very far though.

Its especially people who replay RPG's I dont get, because they're so story driven. Other games like diablo or GTA I can better understand.

I picked yes, Immediately, but not really..
It really does depend on how good the game is.

Eg, I have played Mass Effect over 30 times, ME2 about 20 times. Dragon Age about 20. KotOR about 50 times, KotOR 2 about 20.

Those are the first that came in to my head, as they are my most recents.. But I only play games with replayability value to them.

If Dragon Age is anything like Mass Effect, it isn't really that good a replayable game, but I know there's plenty of people who are plain obsessed about the game and would think nothing is more fun than playing that one game over and over again.

But why? The good bits about those games is the story. The combat (especially in dragon age) isn't very entertaining, and after a few playthroughs you know all the characters dialogue. So why play them so many times?

Usually I enjoy playing games again if it's been awhile. I just finished Resident Evil 4 again today, and I'm thinking on replaying Metal Gear Solid later on...some games are just fun to play through even if you already know what's going to happen IMO.

Meh I dunno. I agree 100%. I even ask myself this question many times. The honest answer is, the games are just amazing. Its not just the story, or the gameplay, or the music, or the graphics, or the acting.. its the whole package. And these games deliver every aspect of a good game perfectly. (not perfectly, but I'm too tired to think of a better adjective).

Even though I know the story of Mass Effect, and every single word of dialogue in KotOR back-to-front.. I will NEVER get bored of these games. Its familiar, its brilliant, its genius.

Its an absolutely crap answer, I know.. its just.. I love them. Like re-re-reading a favourite book. you could know the words in your sleep, but it just feels so right.

It really does depend on the game. Some I'll replay immediately, but some I'll leave for a while and go back to in a few months and others I won't touch for years on end.

And some games I'll replay every few months almost religiously because they're just that good.

I may play a few games straight after I finish them but usually I replay games a good couple of months after I last played them. At the moment I'm replaying Far Cry 2 because I had a hankering to play it. This is the third time that I've replayed it and the second attempt at a 100% completion run. I usually only replay stuff when I get a random feeling to do so.

Oblivion is another example of one of the games that I randomly replay for no reason but with that my time I spend playing it varies from a week to a couple of months.

I guess people are just different like that then. I can finish a great game or read a great book and just want more, but I just get bored if I try to play the same game or read the same book again.

I only replay if it's a good enough game to warrant it. I played Alpha Protocol through twice on the day I got it simply because it was very fun for me to play. I replayed Heavy Rain 7 times to get every ending and I've played Oblivion through so many times its ridiculous.

I guess that's a fair analogy. Well, its not like I don't get bored of them. I do take breaks in between them, like, to 'forget' the story for a while. Like, I took a 2 year break since by last playthrough of KotOR and my recent one. I guess I just like, as I said, the familiarity of how good they are.
Sometimes I don't play them because I like the story, more that I want to 100% it, like AC2. And Mass Effect 2- I didn't particularly like the story (its BioWare, its nowhere near bad), but I played it so many times just to see who I could kill off and feel better/worse for it. etc

I replay Freelancer excessively, like every two months or so on a cycle. No, replaying it hasn't changed my love for the game in any degree. It is just "the game" I play.

If the game is good, then I'll replay it. If it's poor on quality, then I usually won't. It's more about enjoyment than quality though. If I had fun, chances are it'll be back in my system sometime in the near future.

Damn, I love that game although I haven't touched it in about a year. This thread has made me think about playing through a few of my older games. Well there goes my free time.

Freelancer is a great game! That is one of the only games I've replayed. That and the PoP games.
For some reason I can replay sands of time without getting bored of it. Pretty strange.

I'll replay a game to get more trophies (achievements,) to discover new stuff, because it was a great story I want to get again or because a friend comes over and it's entertaining to play together. For instance, a friend and I played through Heavy Rain no more than a week after I had finished it my first time. Not only where there a few new things to discover, but it was worth experiencing it again with a friend.
