Haha wow, I'm surprised at how unanimous this topic turned out. Guess I'm a socially awkward penguin.

I reply as soon as I can, it can feel a little weird but if the person sending the message expects a reply then chances are they'd prefer it right away.

If I am online when I receive it, I'll reply right away. It seems more polite to give someone an answer as soon as possible than to wait a bit so as to not seem desperate or whatever.

Well, if I notice it, I may as well reply. I'm not going to put it off just to try and conform to some preconceived notion that I should be so busy I'm apparently deaf and unable to feel the phone vibrate in my pocket.

Seriously, the lack of physical senses people seem to display in all manner of circumstances these days worries the hell out of me. I mean I know that humanity has long since lost its natural hunting instinct, but I didn't know we were supposed to be deaf dumb and blind as well...

I hate it when you're on actual chat and someone won't reply in a timely fashion.

I don't mean email or messages but IM within facebook or MSN. I always reply immediately,
we're having a conversation, and I always hate it when I reply but they seem to think its
ok to leave it 2-5 mins at a time (e.g. pretending their talking to loads of people, sigh,
I know you, I know you are just refreshing your ex's page or summat (ugh facebook)). Its
audacious and rude imo.

I think if you have the capacity to reply there and then, no matter what medium, then bloody
well reply and get over your perceived inadequacies about people thinking you aren't busy or
something. If they know you're at home what are you busy doing? Surfing ain't exactly busy,
jerking off is the only viable excuse really :p
Oh God, this. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine actually once told me that when his friend asked for this girl's email, he said "okay, hang on", then waited a minute before pasting it to make it seem like he had loads of MSN contacts.

Also, I hate when you're having an IM chat with someone and they get up to go deal with something, and don't announce it first. Seriously. "BRB" will do. It's irritating when we're having a conversation and I randomly get left hanging.

Of course I do, the worst well annoying thing to happen if the person doesn't reply back for ages (unless he or she stated why he or she didn't reply asap like busy in work etc). I don't leave that person waiting for ages.

Point of order: I don't get facebook messages.

I don't use facebook.

Put in an option for that in yer poll.

It's pretty well established among everyone I know irl that I'm an introverted nerd and I barely ever leave my room, so I don't have a dilemma with responding instantly. I also seem to be super in sync with when people will message me because I can play games for hours on end, minimise once, and find a fresh message.

Spider-man-like internet senses? I think so.

Oh jesus fucking christ, turn off your romantic comedy's and burn those fantasy romance novels, this isn't a joke it's an intervention, you had too much it's time to step outside and smell the real world.

When you have time you respond, simple, no thought required and you got nothing to read into it.
People really need to take a step back and for once think about things that might actually be important in life.

If I am available and see the message, I reply right away. I hate trying to talk to someone and they reply 10 minutes later, or 10 hours later. It is so frustrating when I get a reply "yeah man, me too" and I have to try and remember what the fuck I was talking about.
