Present, the past is never as good as we like to imagine. Being a chick in 1958 will most likely destroy any chance of getting rich for me.
and being a 2000's kid, I'll get a mentel breakdown from being away from the internet after a week.

Better medical technology, a more tolerant society, star trek, the internet, high resolution video games, fast cheap cars, and computers are among a few numerous reasons I would stay in the present.

I couldn't live in that time... why not the year 1995? I could invest in google, facebook, and apple. I would still make a shit ton of money (assuming I have money to invest in it in the first place, in bills that are not marked 1996 on) and I could still have at the very least play flash games on shockwave using netscape.

Past. I could meet Sinatra. Or at least go to one of his shows.

Invent burger franchises, pizza franchises, slushies, computers, tiny little hard drives, internet, NASA tech, cars and car tech, alloys, medical research, etc etc etc ...

With a lot of money then, you could find other types of fun instead of internet and video games. Hell, I could invent Google. I could end up the most influential person in the whole world by taking all the modern stuff to that time period. Sign me up!

It would be cool to just study up on some modern technology and some history of that time to ensure I become the wealthiest and most powerful guy ever to have walked the earth. I would know about most stuff before it happened, so I could easily rule the world.
Considering I'd probably change everything that's gonna happen, though, I think I'll just stay here.

I'll stay, thanks. You know they still used lead paint all over the place then? Savages.

Present, because i seriously doubt i could make use of any opportunities in the past.

Think about it, how likely is it REALLY to get rich?

You probably lack money (true, you likely can get your hands on 1958 Money nowadays, but on how much?), connections or useful knowledge (think about Apples iPod...it's not about inventing something, but knowing how to sell it, and having the circumstances to do so, and ideally having some established brand recognition), and your options are likely limited since you likely don't exist in 1958 yet and you therefore have no birth certificate, licenses and the like...

No. For many reasons.

First off almost all the things I like wouldn't exist: TV (I know TV existed, but it was shit), Internet, movies, video games, and gadgets. Second of all my profession that I'm trained in wouldn't exist (IT) so I wouldn't be able to get a job.

I doubt I'd be able to get rich. I have absolutely no clue what horse won the grand national in 1959. I don't even know who won last year. As for predicting stock market events that'd be even worse. I highly doubt anyone here could give practical investment advice about the 60s. Maybe as I got to the 90s I could see companies like Google start to emerge and get on early, but I'd be in my sixtys by then.

A few people say they'd"invent the Internet" or start Google. I highly doubt, however that you could invent the Internet by yourself using 50s technology. Who would need a search engine until the 2000s?

I suppose I could go and stop the Kennedy assassination, but they did that on Red Dwarf, and it all went to shit. Also id much rather watch the first ever broadcast episode of Doctor Who which was shown the same day (the Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away).

Past. I could do the same thing I do now (librarian) and not be judged for not being married because librarians are awesome in history like that. I'd go run a small library in a small town and read and write and ride horses and garden and have lots of cats. I would love it. I would miss technology, but I might be happier living a simpler life.
You can do that now. Go to a small town and run a library. You can live your crazy cat filled dream!

Well...one of the big cons is that if you are changing things, you are basically re-rolling the dice on the Cold War.

Suppose you stop JFK getting assassinated, but a few years later someone tries for a later PotUS. Doesn't matter if they succeed or not, but gives it a go. But coincidently, there's a strike affecting the intelligence or communication or government system in the UK, and the USSR is running a large training exercise.

So, an attempt on the life of the PotUS, the UK is in some degree of turmoil, and lots of military movement in the USSR all of a sudden.

That actually happened when Reagan got shot, and could potentially have sparked WW3. I'm told when the Soviets found out Reagan had been shot, they told their forces to stop whatever they were doing right now, leave the planes on the tarmac and walk away, until the US was sure they weren't planning anything.

...

Yeah, not sure I'd want to risk something going wrong next time.

This is a no-brainer, back in the 50s you could wear hats all the time, even indoors, and it's not just acceptable, it's the norm!

Stay in the present, absolutely. The loss immeasurably outweighs the gain. I'd loose my family, friends, nearly all my hobbies, my possessions, my job... Not worth it in the slightest.

Also, I'm pretty sure the 'simpler time' has more to do with the 20 meter thick rose-tinted lenses people seem to see the 50's and 60's with than it actually being 'simpler'.

And I'm pretty sure I'd go insane after a few days of everyone being so far behind. Not only do you know about future world events, but you'll know all the advances in human knowledge. Trying to have a discussion with someone who doesn't know a fraction of what you know... You'd know about the negative effects of smoking, asbestos or thalidomide. You'd know about HIV and AIDS. And you'd be alone in your knowledge. You'd be the one crazy person on the street, screaming to anyone who'd listen that they're killing themselves, and nobody would know just how right you were... It'd be like living Idiocracy. It would be hell.

Seriously? No one mentioned world domination!!
Yes I would like to stay in the present and while I love my computer and server (I would so take them back with me) and all my other gadgets I actually could care less as my retirement has always been to go live in countryside (preferable here in Japan - its just a better shade of green) without the need for work. Just relax, read, maybe garden, lots of fun cooking tools (fire pits, tandors, grills, etc.) However I would miss all the art (games, music, tv, books) and social progress that has come since 1958.

Alas I must choose 1958, with my foreknowledge of the future I would have I could actually bring about the super megacorporation for good, not evil). Privatise the military with better tech create the demand and then turn it into dependancy. I would also create or buy all the emerging telecom, tech, food, textile, and transportation companies. I would obviously do this under dummy companies and possible alter egos. And then once I had it all I would leverage it -and the Cold War/Assured destruction scared mentality, with some extra prodding from my media companies - to make a true world government, or an effective U.N. Or in other words a U.N. that has final say over the worlds governments who only master is the benefit of humanity. With the only military force, dissallowing all other militaries (only police forces)I could also institute my idea for a world education system. It bascially boils down to everyone must spend their teen years 12-18 moving to at least 3 other countries in different parts of the world (you learn the other languages from 8-12). Thusly with a few generations the world would no longer condone war, opression, and intolerance from the understanding achieved from walking in other peoples shoes. Obviously this would be mandatory for everyone, from the poorest village in Africa to the Ivy league super rich, no one would be out of reach.

So yes world domination to achieve the impossible, peace and understanding for humanity.

That sounds lovely, if society demmands you find a wife I shall be available!

OT: I would go back to 1958, make me some monies and live a comfortable, quiet life. There's not much keeping me here; social networking has taken all the fun out of life and having the world at your fingertips via the internet means there's not much motivation for me to go out into the world.

I would prefer the late 1800s though, they had better taste in clothing and I wouldn't have to live through the hippy era

I'd need a husband, I don't think being a lesbian librarian would be a good thing back then. :p Ah well, all those women of my grandparent's generation were just called "housemates" and such. Everyone knew, but didn't care - two women living together wasn't seen as unusual or dirty back then. I loved meeting some of my gramma's friends, my mom would tell me they'd been together for like 40/50 years. So sweet.

... Yay tangent.

I also agree - I've only got a few close friends that I would miss and I'd be walking to the corner store and to and from work and such - would be nice. Except I'd move south so I wouldn't have to deal with winter.
