Anyhoo... You select whether you want to be the Good Guys (Ascended) or the Bad Guys (Defiant)
After reading this it is easy to tell you havnt bothered reading the lore what so ever, if anything not enough.
The lore is good in a mad intresting way but doesnt lay it on as thick as WOW or other mmo do.
Both Gaurdians and Defiant are both Good they are just at war due to ethics, on both side you are fed propoganda leading many to this confused conclusion. Ascended are what you play and are ressurected souls. as a gaurdian you are ressurected by the gods while as defiant you are made through a sceince to simulate this ressurection both leaving you as ascended (people whos souls are altered allowing them to rencarnate and bend souls (talant trees) to their will).

I enjoy the game immensely, being able to ignore doing quests and level up solely on dungeons and pvp/ warfronts is freaking awesome, also having a 100% "open world" as in no download times in between just roaming around is pretty neat.

And of course being able to choose 3 different "class-types" to specialize in is great, especially when you can just get an overall of 3-4 roles with 3 different combinations and switch in-between in 2 seconds is quite handy. One of the only games where getting stuck is a hard challenge and being insanely bug-free at release it is worth trying if you are tired of WoW or just looking for a nice polished MMO to play.

As to does it offer anything unique, the short answer is a plain no, but the game being top-notch and NOT lacking end-game content is a huge plus for players like me so it's all good.

But, I guess there is always GW 2 for those who don't quite like how Rift plays. :)

"The short answer is a plain no" I would disagree the game doesnt take a giant leap in inovation HOWEVER the game take hundreds of small choice which I feel out weigh the the large leap.

Rift isn't a bad game, but there are several better ones on the horizon; most notably Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
And Guild Wars 2 has no subscription fees!
Wait a minute it has NO subscription fees? So I pay like the $50 or how ever much it'll cost, and thats it? Well looks like I found the first MMO i will ever play. I just could never see paying more money after I buy a game, since I would never put the amount of time that would make it a good deal. But this,this is great. Time to start watching vids on i t then.

OT: Yeah I have no idea, I was bored and entered thread....I'll leave now.
Actually, instead of monthly updates for a monthly fee, guildwars gets it cash through publishing major expansions regularly. This way they can say there is no fee in hopes of getting exactly ^this^ reaction. It's still loads cheaper than WoW though, wich esentially does both (fees AND an expansion every now and than). But yeah just wanted to give you a heads up so you're not horribly disappointed once the first expansion is announced within months after the original release.

Rift is not releasing extra content with any extra cost so price wise it sounds like
Rift cost = Guild Wars
so with Rift your subsciption pays for content rather then how world of warcraft works EG 2 extra instance/ raids ever 3 months and then an expansion every so often.

lol, yes they are. They've been doing server messages about "pardon our dust" when temporarily enabling expansion content for quick tests on the alpha server. They're working on an expansion.

...I just... Can't. Seem. To run... fast enough... to SEE IT!
Wait I'm confused so...
WoW = fee + expansions
guildwars = expansions
rift = fee + expansions?

Thats correct THEY ARE NOT CHARGING FOR EXTRA CONTENT all you pay is for subscriptions and the game it self, The devs dont want extra cost on top of the subsciption you are already paying which sounds fair to me.

Okay so no expansions but will the monthly fees come with any content updates or are they just for keeping the servers running?

I enjoy the story, especially from the Defiant side, its WAY more interesting than the Guardians, which is a generic "oh we need defenders, so we are bringing you back from the dead"... The Defiants have TIME TRAVEL, are a genuinely oppressed race because for whatever reason the Guardians blame the RIFTS on the Defiants, even though if they had a brain between the lot of them would realize its a scapegoat... and the Defiants are trying to defend their civilization against the Rifts, and now have the Guardians to worry about too since they are being righteous pricks.
Great post firstly sums up a problem many players are having with RIFT.
The deiant will push propoganda in your face about the gaurdians being bad and silly but its no true FOR BOTH SIDES. From what i can tell both sides are being silly and childish as they both dont want to work together. the defiant decided to use sourcestone for energy in their machines causing them to be dishoned by the major gods.

The prince of matoshia caused a civil war by allowing the defiant machines to be reintroduced becuase he wanted to summon Regulos the god of the death plane. Defiant = Victim, Gaurdian = Victim and Regulos and Andraxis(Prince/King) = Mastermind/Villan. and now all the Other planes water, fire and so on decided not to be lead by regulos and rebel all fighting each other.

They are planning to constantly updating the game for as long as they have subscripers with no extra fees. Warhammer currently does this just very badly.

furthermore there content seems like it can be chucked into the game at a moments notice as they do insta quick patchs with a 30 min warnings and also are using the unreal engine with a fully fleshed out creation systems so differnt RIFTS can be made in vast quantites in a day
