I don't... understand... how?
What on Earth could Anonymous do stop the riots?

I wasn't aware they had armored vehicles and water cannons.
These riots weren't really planned, there is no real figurehead or organisation.

What the hell is Anonymous supposed to do about a riot? You can't DDoS a riot.
True.

But you can DDOS Twitter and Facebook xD

They are using the social network sites to organise their small group of friends and contacting others when some shit hits a fan and everyone needs to evacuate the area as the cops are arriving in force.

Once that is down then they only have their mobiles... and hopefully their credit will run out eventually xD
That doesn't sound like Anonymous, anyway. If there's one thing they have never been fearful of getting behind, it's chaotically free speech. Besides, Anonymous also uses Twitter and Facebook to forward their efforts and communicate with their supporters. To take those down would be a big middle finger to all of their supporters.

And I'm not even so sure they could effectively DDoS Twitter or Facebook. Both are monolithic web sites with nearly countless servers. They had better have as many drone computers as they let on they do, because they'd need every one of them at full power to do any noticeable damage.

Voted hell yes because there's not really anything anyone can do online, which means they'd have to show up at the riots in person, which would most likely end with them getting their asses kicked because the people rioting would think they're making fun of them. This would amuse me immensely.
So your own amusement is more important than the well being and health of others? What a pleasant person you must be.
Me and about 75% of the population, yes.
75% of the world's population is not made of sociopaths.
They just won't admit it.

But alright, hotshot. Why don't you sell your favourite game console and donate the money to charity? I keep hearing something about people starving somewhere and shit, dunno. Or is your own amusement more important than the well being and health of others?

Yep, that's a completely different situation. It's also the exact same principle.

If you disagree, we can always go about this another way. For instance, look at how large the audience is for fighting sports, or what people think is the most exciting part of the tour de france. People like seeing other people get hurt. Few will admit it in those words, but it seems almost human nature.

First off do your homework:
http://blog.games.com/2011/08/09/anonymous-destroy-facebook-nov-5/

Anonymous have announced their vow to destroy Facebook... on the 5th of November(They love that film)

Secondly:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/08/04/anon_develops_loic_ddos_alternative

Now basically... this is so far very powerful... very, very powerful...

How powerful?
http://www.slashgear.com/anonymous-may-be-testing-a-new-attack-tool-dubbed-refref-02168929
The first test of the new attack tool was apparently against PasteBin. The image you see here is a tweet from PasteBin.

The test is said to have lasted only 17 seconds and the website was down for 42 minutes after the attack. The tool is reportedly going to replace the current Anonymous tool LOIC in September
... 17 seconds... 42 minuets site down time.

If this was done constantly to a site by say... 1,200 people (the sort of numbers who helped on with the defence of wiki leaks). That sort of shit would cause a significant dent into Facebooks capabilities. Now if they were able to spread this piece of software as a polymorphic virus then they could have tens of thousands of programs destroying Facebook with this overpowered piece of software.

Um. No. It's a issue for the police/riot police. And after tonight it seems they have it under control. 10,000 more police are out on the streets tonight in London alone with rubber bullet ammunition and being told to arrest anyone involved. What would be the point of them being involved? There's no connection to the internet with this, it's just people getting together and creating havok and stealing everything that's not tied down. Having a third party like them involved would just make things flare up more... Sure they've helped in a few cases, but honestly this isn't their battle.

many of you say that anonymous only operate online (wich is almost always true) however i have read in the newspaper that the riots have all been planned online aswell. thats why i thought they might be able to do something.
I think you misunderstand Anon. They aren't the police.

I vote for this outcome too, so take my yes to mean this please.

Edit: also why would they care? They're too busy basking in media attention themselves to bother helping anyone out, you know, what with all that cyber bullying they enjoy.

Dude, they probably support the rioters or something, cos they're apparently 'stickin' up 2 da mahn!'

Screw them, but screw the rioters much more.

Looks like someone doesn't have a clue about Anonymous. Please explain how this is a job for Anonymous. If anything Anonymous is more like to go against the police than the rioters. Also, why is the last option in the poll "definetly not, i hate anonymous"? Why can't it just be "definetly not"?

I don't know how anonymous could help end the riots seeing that they are a bunch of loosely affiliated hackers.

I think OP means helping with tracking the mugs down on Twitter etc. and therefore finding out where they live and stuff.

That would be cool.

Anonymous can't though, they don't have nearly enough computing power. And they'll give up in a few days when it starts raining, might as well let them have their fun.

Anonymous is a bunch of hackers who affect the virtual landscape not the physical one. They could track down some of the organizers online, but riots are inherently chaotic and spur of the moment as well as tacking down the organized part would have so much impact. Not to mention the fact that this would be anonymous helping authorities for no good reason and in a way limiting freedom of speech by not letting people riot. That doesn't seem like them.

Uh, what? Facebook is too big for Anonymous to take down by DDOSing; they tried taking Amazon down a while ago, and utterly failed. Because they didn't have enough computers for a successful DDOS.

If they have a zero-day exploit on fb, then it's plausible. But firstly, they don't have the intelligence, and secondly, why would they announce a really far-off date, as that gives time for the admins to prepare.

Anon is a joke, the lost all credibility and influence during chanology. Morality is killing them from the inside.

These riots are caused by a series of complex social issues and HERP A DERP DOX LEAK isn't going to solve anything.
