Poll: ripping off bastards! (should i buy a ps2)

so i just bought silent hill 2 since apparently it's the best evar (yahtzee's favourite) and i've never played it, however i did so under the blindly naive assumption that what sony advertised is the same as what spent nearly £400 on, in other words my 40GB ps3 doesn't have backwards compatibility and it seems there is no software based method (that i can find on the internet) to make it possible (you've no doubt heard this story before).

at fist i was actually quite surprised, but then i thought about it a bit and i realised that actually, no this isn't surprising at all. Nothing i have ever bought off of sony has ever ever worked properly, my ps3 is constantly plagued by that bloody 80710092 error that they are still to lazy to find a fix for so i'm constantly having to reset my router, my PSP will not connect to that router and therefore not to my ps3 either, when i phoned up customer support they actually suggested buying a new one (perhaps from sony no doubt), my first ps2 stopped for no reason and thay wouldn't offer me a refund either.

but this isn't just a ranting thread, what i'd like to know is, do you guys think that silent hill 2 is a good enough game to justify spending about £10 on a pre owned ps2.

Totally. The PS2 is after all the greatest console ever.

Well except for the fact that it appears to also be the most fragile console. I've had 3 different PS2 who've all decided to die on me.

I'm sorry but thats your fail for not researching/checking the packaging first. Surely it doesn't take long to look up any hardware review of the ps3 which will state it does not (with exception to the very first models 60gbs?) have backwards compatibility with the ps2. It even has a suitably large warning on the 40gb box (version I own) warning of this fact.

OT: £10 is good value for a ps2, but as pointed out they are rather fragile (from word of mouth not experience)

Eh. The PS2 is the latest console I own (due to primarily PC gaming and a total lack of care). I have an older version, the bigger monstrosity, and it has served me faithfully since '03 with nary an error or hiccup. I don't even own a DVD player for my TV other than the PS2.

Besides, there are several other PS2 games you can get for cheap now that are well worth your time.

Buy a PS2. £10 aint alot. May be annoying but once you have it at least you can go and but other awesome games for PS2 (Shadow of the Colossus, FF XII, original God of War, GTA:San Andreas etc, etc.)

The PS2 is the greatest console ever created, mainly because it has the original Ratchet and Clank games but also because it has Robot Wars: Arenas of Destruction!

I got mine for a tenner from a friend who had two of them...

I'd do it. SH 2 was good and as has been pointed out it has a stupid big library of really good games. And as far as I know the ps2 is completely backwards compatible so if you have or wanted to get ps1 games you could. I really do miss the days of not having to worry about backwards compatibility.

I say go for it. Even with my ps3 I still get kicks out of my ps2. It'll give you access to the ps2 game library as well. Not to mention that you can always just sell it if you don't wish to own it anymore.

Download and Emulator and the RoM version of the game if you don't want to spend the money on the console.

Or you could just use the actual disk.

wish i could, but i only have a laptop, unless there is a way to download an emulator onto my ps3.

Kind of stupid not to research the console's capabilities first, but regardless of that you should really get a PS2, it's worth it - that baby has a whole bunch of extremely sweet games, and neither the console nor the majority of the games should cost very much at this point.

A laptop should be fine for a PS2 emulator all you would really need would be a controller. I know you can PS1 emulators on the PsP though sure about PS3.

PS2 is the best console, apart from GC and N64..

I bought one afew weeks ago just soi could play NBA JAM and dynasty warriors 4 again.

Odd, the only thing I've ever bought from Sony that failed on me was my PS2. And that was because the dog managed to sit on the controller cable and drag it off a desk while it was running, I'm not sure I can blame them for that.

OT: Yeah, if you can get one for cheap enough. Are there any other games you might play on it? I don't have much experience with the Silent Hill franchise so I can't say if it's worth it for just one game. I wouldn't be all that surprised if it go re released for the PS3 though, a la God Of War I&II and the up coming Splinter Cell & Prince Of Persia trilogies. You'll be waiting a lot longer of course.

unfortunately i've filled this laptop with kinds of large programs, i dont really have any space left, and i kind of need all of them.
