I would definitely go for it. However I recommend getting the bigger version. My slim stopped playing PS1 games after a few of years. According to GameStop (who I'm wary to believe) this was a common problem with the slim.

That shouldn't be an issue. He has a PS3 and all models have BC with PS1 games.

Although I heard somewhere the Back'Comp' on PS3 was a bit ropey anyway? No idea if that's true or not never saw it in action.

If you mean by ropey that not all games are compatible, then yes. But so far, I haven't encountered any games that I couldn't play on mine.
