I sure hope so. Fallout3 is one of my favourite games until now. I think I will try Mass Effect, since you guys enjoyed it so much

I think it can, if only because its just a side step of the standard action RPG, and in a good way as I see it. Games like Fallout 3 and Borderlands really set up this genre.

Absolutely, it's one of my favourite genres. I'm not a sworn RPG-er, so games I quickly get bored with games like The Witcher.

Yes, yes they can. Because they've been around for aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggees anyway.

System shock 1 is the oldest I can think of right now. Next to games like Deus Ex and System Shock 2 the current crop of fps rpg's are actually quite watered down, there's still plenty of space for them to expand.

That they are coming into fashion again now is indicative of player's general lack of interest in the cookie cutter 6-hour fps mould pretty much all major shooters from the last 3 years have filled.

But they certainly ain't a new born genre, not by a long shot.

I really hope so. I've always liked gunplay more than swordplay but I like the questing and co-op and such. It's probably one of my new favorite genres so I hope it stays.

Of the two most recent (and best) examples, I'd have to say that Fallout 3 (as an RPG with shooter bits) and Borderlands (as a Shooter with levelling) are both obscenely fun.

I reckon they'll stay around for a decent length of time, and hopefully they'll stay fun!

Yes, I hope it survives anyway. When done well, it's an excellent thing (BorderLands, Fallout 3). But some games that cannot do it should stick to one or the other.

Wouldn't Hellgate:London (better known as Failgate) also be considered an RPS?

I actually like HG:L....... that being said, this is my first post so please don't kill me.

Still eagerly awaiting a good Shadowrun FP-RPG/MMO...

I can't dream can't I?

and the 360 game that's out doesn't count.

Well, if it keeps pumping out such great games as Fallout 3 and Borderlands, it'll probably survive.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl & Clear Sky are very good RPSes, and the soon to be released Call of Pripyat will be adding further to the games features. Can't wait!

After playing Borderlands i fully hoped that there would be more games like it, just with more customization.

Most games the try to be an RPS end up like BioShock, i.e. mostly an FPS, or like Fallout 3 i.e. mostly an RPG. Borderlands did it pretty well though, and I would love to see more games like it.
