b) no, its not necessary or desirable, Creative Assembly are already pulling the GTA and nintendo bullshit of re-releasing their old games. whats the point? ok so maybe Shogun is unplayable compared to newer more modern games, but Rome Total War not that aged, i can still play it happily and im a graphics whore.
For god sake (and i know they aren't actually making a RTW2, this is a rant at shogun 2) Creative Assembly, there are other periods in history you could cover.
ok maybe we have gone as far forward as we reasonably can go and keep it the same game (napoleon didn't really work out, but i can't understand why you haven;t realeased a game where we can see the brits butchering the boers and zulus). but there are other periods, maybe look closer at the Greeks (Alexander Total War doesn't count, as the greeks were one faction, and so were the persians and barbarians.)
Where is Mongol Total War? hell you could still explore the far east, just don't limit yourself to Japan. the Japs owned Korea pre-world war 1, they invaded china at least twice that i know of, why not make Shogun total war 2 (if you have to make it at all) feature the entire theatre? Japan, Korea, China, hell you can include barbarian Russia if you want.
and failling all else you can go fantasty. where is Lord of the Rings Total War (ignoring the mediocre mod), i can guarentee that will sell well. Where is Warhammer Fantasy Total War (they have already apparently included hero units in Shogun 2, it fits they could include them in a possible WFTW). I can guarentee THAT would sell like hot cakes, and you can have all sorts in there, minimum 2 types of undead, 4 different types of Chaos armies, minimum 3 different types of human, marauders and pirates, 2 different types of elves (good and bad), minimum 2 types of dwarves.
the possibilties are bloody endless! don't go re-releasing old stuff till your bucket is truly empty and creative assembly shoudln't have that excuse!!
