I want to know who here makes their RPG characters look like themselves and who makes characters that don't look like themselves. I know it probably varies from game to game, so I'll say, which do you prefer to do, or do usually?

Maybe it's a satire on modern stereotypes.
And I tend to go for the big boobed hard as you like lady types, though I am a well endowed angry lady, I tend to go for something more intersting than myself.

I'm not sure of your intent, but that sorta, kinda sounds racist.
Yes, it does. Report?
Perhaps it's because he believes a black person will escape better at night due to their dark skin?

Is that racist? I don't think so. While the merits of dark skin in the escape of authorities at night has never been tested against the merits of having white skin, it's not a lie that black people have dark skin. It's merely speculation as to whether it's true or not.

Maybe it's a satire on modern stereotypes.
That works too.

I make a tiny pretty boy, just so I can kit him out in the heaviest full plate mail and greathammer/greatsword.

I think role playing means being a character who isn't like you. if the character is exactly like you the role your playing is yourself, and whats the point in that?

I tend to play comedy midgets if aviliable. If not I'll make something equally unlikely. I'm 6'3" and don't tend to have brightly coloured hair.

No game has hair curley enough to match me. Plus most of them remove an option for glasses, so basicly I cant recreate myself in any game I have played.

The only ones I've ever tried in in are The Sims 2 and the Mii. Surprisingly, the Mii turned out a lot better.

Most of the time, though, I just try to combine attributes that look good together.

In RPG games I usually either:

play as a female or
play as a black man and do criminal acts.

ohhhh no he didn't! Snap!

I generally play as a female character when given the choice too. Character customization almost always amounts to a half an hour of me playing dress-up dollies.

I don't know... if I could ever play as a character in a wheelchair I might try and make them look like me, but then I may as well ask for a third eye and magic hypno-powers while I'm at it.

A character that reflects me is out so I opt for a character I would like.

Usualy i go for the smallest profile/hitbox possible without gimping stats if it's an fpsrpg like the upcoming fallout 3. If the game doesn't have hitboxes, i generaly pick the biggest and bulkiest thing i can find and block enemies view in multiplayer.

I enjoy creating characters that look like me in RPGs. I like to see what choices I'd make in the strange, exotic situations that RPGs offer. RPGs, for me, are methods toward answering the question, "In situation X, what would I do?" Creating a character in my image is another way for me to tie myself into the events of the game.

Besides, creating a character that looks like me is actually very easy to do. I bear a strong resemblence to my father and grandfather and even my oldest cousin, which makes it easy to guess what I'll look like in 15, 25, or 65 years.

It really depends on what mood I'm in at the time. In general, the characters are not the usual "Huge-chested woman fighting in a bikini" or "Huge-muscled man in a loincloth" or even "long, white haired girly man that looks like he should be in an episode of Naruto". I usually try to create a backstory in my head for a character, then create a model that fits that story.

I tend to create characters that look like an idealized version of me if the character is going to be used in a more social manner.

If it's a game like Mass Effect or Oblivion, I try to create characters that are original, characters that look like something you would find in a fantasy epic like Forgotten Realms.

In fighting games that let you customize characters (see: Soul Calibur 3 & 4) I tend to make a character that has a fair bit of armor, seeing as how it just makes sense. I will usually avoid having flowing robes and the like, but I will sometimes throw in a cape or scarf if I feel it adds to the character's appearance.

Every so often I will create a female character, in which case I will make her attractive, because if I'm going to be looking at her for hours on end, I'd rather she be attractive. However, like I said before, I don't consider attractive to be "Huge boobs, tiny bikini". I make characters that are moderately attractive, more in the line of Ashe from FF XII than Fran, or more like Cassandra than Ivy from Soul Calibur.

All RPG Characters look like me. I have huge eyes that take up 50% of my head, a tiny mouth, and green hair.

I always make RPG characters look as plain and average as possible and pretend that they are postmen or toilet cleaners instead of a hulking space marine in powered armour. Those guys are so lame and unoriginal.

Uhm... I see you apparently think all RPG games come from the land of the rising sun. I am virtually certain given that this thread is discussing character customization which is near unheard of in JRPGs that the games of focus are western developed RPGs along the lines of Oblivion or Mass Effect.

If you were making a joke you dropped the ball on that one.

I will say the poll is an unnecessary add-on and pretty lousy to boot. Yes / No / Maybe styled polls are best left to not be seen.

To be fair to him, though I'm not entirely sure on the eyes, you could give yourself green hair and a tiny mouth on Oblivion.

Well considering that i'm a +6 ft overweight scruff with an odd walk and am in the middle of trying to grow a beard which seems to only want to grow out of one side of my face i'm going to have to say:
no, not really no.
Having said that though I do try to mimic my own height and hair whenever I can (a little past shoulder length, kinda scruffy and brownish ginger) so I supose I try to make an idiolized version of myself
