Now im getting a new pc rather soon and it will be the first time I have ever gamed on a pc really (apart from some counter strike a long time ago) as I've been a nintendo fanboy all my life, and I want to get an epic long rpg adventure to go with it. Fallout 3 and Dragon age Origins both look very tasty to me and I will 99% pick them both up over the coming months, but obviously one can't really have two immersive rpg's going at the same time so which would YOU recommend I pick up first to get me into the whole computer rpg thing, or perhaps another game that is a long and involving adventure?

Thanks in advance

OBLIVION!! I am aware of its faults but there is something about the game that just gets me and I love it.

Dragon age is more linear(sp?) and you can go where you like when you like but there are only about 7 places to go...it is an enjoyable game but make sure you have a billion health packs if you want to be a rogue - or maybe I'm just rubbish. DA also doesn't take ages to get into the action. A lot of people find fallout 3 and oblivion hard to get into.

Fallout 3 and oblivion are alike but obviously plot and characters are very different...but you pretty much can go where you want (and its pretty massive) when you want and more so are encouraged to. If you want to rush through it you can play the plot line but I think that's sort of wasting the game. Fall out is scarier and funnier than oblivion. But there is just something about oblivion that I love.

PLUS! you can get oblivion and bioshock in one packet now, and I don't think its very expensive.

Fallout 3 is definitely a good RPG to use to break into the genre. You can choose whether youd prefer first or 3rd person, real-time shooting, or turn based, stat-based shooting. The world feels very alive (even if the characters don't always) and the customization is fun. Also, the Capital Wasteland is massive and endlessly entertaining.

Dragon Age is great, too, once you get into the style. Customization is limited, and the world is not nearly as open, but as with all of Bioware's stuff, the writing is epic and characters are alive. The combat is more tactical, if slower, and more variable thanks to its class system.

I'd say start with FO3 (With the Anchorage DLC for the items, Point Lookout and Broken Steel DLC for the story), then move on to DA:O and DA:A. After those, you might want to go back and play the 2 original Fallouts, too.

I know, I saw it on amazon for £10 and was like "Wahh!", so that will go on the queue too but I have just heard lots of negative things about Oblivion, and not much negative at all about Fallout or Dragon Age, and I really want something to get me into the whole cRPG thing with a bang. I used to be (and still am I suppose) a JRPG fanboy, and playing Dragon Quest on a snes emulator made me realise I love exploration and non-linearityness lots and JRPS don't have that now. But anyway I went completely off the point there so yeah.. thanks for the recommendation!

There are quite a few good ones to get started on. The ones that hooked me were Morrwind and KotOR I.

KotOR, the first one.
It's graphics didn't age too well, but I found everything else to be far superior to both of your choices.
Between those two, though, I'd say Dragon Age: Origins, but that's just because I don't like Bethesda games.

I'd recommend either Fallout 3 GOTY or TESIV:Oblivion GOTY. Both are really great games and they are very addicting.

Jonno suspended? That didn't make any sense...

anyway...
KOTOR I or II is how I got started with PCRPGs. Diablo 2 is also a very good choice and is a long game.

However, between DA and FO3, I'd choose DA because it's more RPG-like. On the other hand, FO3 is a very unique and fun game and will cause addictions.

They're both really good. I like Dragon Age a bit more, but it really only depends on taste. FO3 if you want a more FPS/exploration style game, DA:O if you want a more tactical/story based game.

Dragon Age is up your alley if you want an epic feel, a tight storyline where your choices matter, but one that will see you on a slightly-scripted quest.

Fallout 3 is good if you'd rather wander around and explore on your own pretty much completely instead of following a main quest (though there is one, it's arguably not the highlight of the game).

Also, Dragon Age goes SLASHSLASH and Fallout 3 goes PEWPEW. Pick your poison.

Though if you have a PS2 by some chance, I should point out that my favorite video game ever made is Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. It's an absolutely fantastic RPG and I can't recommend it enough (and don't be scared off by the name; it's in English).

Both Fallout 3 and Dragon Age: Origins are excellent games but in my opinion Oblivion is a better choice then both of them. I found it more immersive than the other two and it certainly had way more play time than Fallout 3. If you're into party-based RPG's play Dragon Age, it too has a few hundred hours of gameplay. If you want to play an easier to learn, solo RPG then go for Oblivion, it has an amazing main quest line and you can keep playing after you've completed it because there is so much more you can do such as all the guilds and the arena, etc.
