Baldur's Gate is the best series, in my opinion. Best single RPG game would be Torment. But, like others have said, Baldur's Gate had an excellent mix of exploration, storyline, strategy and what have you not.
Icewind Dale may have had fine battles, but it was incredible linear. Seeing as it was only battles followed by battles followed by fights followed by struggles, it could get stale a bit. For me, anyway. A bit of exploration would give it an entirely other feel.
Neverwinter Nights 1 was a huge bucket of 'meh'. It was addictive, yes. But it did not really have variation* in it's quests and what not.
Diablo was just a huge hack-n-slasher. Which is fine, but I can't call it a rpg.
I just started fallout 2 and it seems promising.
Really enjoyed the Quest for Glory series. Although that could be called an adventure rpg. But a rpg nonetheless.

*Or at least the feeling of variation.

Fallout for me. Enjoy the setting thoroughly. Completed 1,2,3 and NV numerous times.

KOTOR is up there as well, brilliant.

Well, this is a weird one for me, as I have honestly never played a WRPG.
Although I am hoping to remedy this.

I do like some JRPG's though, but I mainly prefer the ones where you can personalise your party and characters to suit you. Y'know, the ones where you actually ROLE PLAY.
Seriously, so many JRPG's are so linear and have such little customisation and do not possess the feature to metaphorically place yourself into the shoes of your character. That's what I expect I'll enjoy about WRPG's

I can't decide between Mass Effect and Fallout, but I'll say Mass Effect as I've yet to play Fallout 1-2. i need to get on that.

Mass Effect series, as of Mass Effect 2 isnt an RPG series anymore.

Dont anyone bother with the same petty attempts at disagreeing. You spent 90% of the game shooting from behind cover: its a cover based TPS before ANYTHING else. FACT. Listen to the devs talk about how they developed the game. Its obvious.

My choice? Baldurs Gate. A time when Bioware made RPG, rather than destroyed them in a greedy pursuit of making dumbed down cash cow pieces of mediocre shit.
Meh. The "RPG" label is utterly meaningless anyway. The only thing it's good for is generating interminable arguments what is and isn't an RPG.

While I was going to vote for Diablo, because of my love for Diablo 2. I had to take the "None of the above" option, because I remembered the games that made me me.

Guys, Fire Emblem and Disgaea aren't RPGs. They're turn-based strategy games.

And I can't believe no one has mentionned Chrono Trigger yet.

Of the games listed, however, I would say that Mass Effect is my favorite RPG thus far, although, considering I haven't played any of the other games on that list...

If mod's count, then Morrowind is my favorite RPG of all time.

It's got a huge and very detailed, very atmospheric setting with a lot of lore and a lot of characters. The story starts out slow (really....really....r..e...a....l...l.........y slow), but towards the end becomes an interesting deconstruction of the "chosen one versus bad guy" plot you see in so many RPGs. You have a lot of freedome to customise and develop your character (even to the extent of making your own class instead of going with one of just a few offered by the game).

And most importantly, Ring of Hircine, bitches!

What really keeps me playing even to this day, though, is the modding community. There are litterally hundreds of mods, many of which can be installed and played alongside one another at the same time. Mods for improving the graphics, mods for adding new quests, mods for altering the gameplay, mods for adding new character creation options, mods for adding new enemies, mods for adding new dungeons, mods for adding new landmasses, mods for adding party members, mods for adding new spells, mods for adding new items....

However, without mod's, my favorite is Fable. The combat is very smooth and fun, keeping RPG elements important while still giving you a more visceral action-game feel, you have lots of ways to develop your character, almost every quest has some moral choice in it, and the whole mythos is full of good humor.

Both of the above also hold a lot of nostalgia for me. I don't know how I would have made it through middle school without them.
ALL JRPGS ARE JUST THE SAME PRE-PUBESCENT KIDS SAVING THE PLANET WITH THE SAME BASIC PREMISE OF A LOVE INTEREST AND A DOPEY SIDE KICK.
Oh, I absolutely love when people who are stating something that I disagree with use this kind of argument. It is so easy to refute! All I need to do is come up with a single JRPG that isn't like what you're talking about!

Therefore, Poke'mon.
