Borderlands was amazing!
I love RPGs!
Borderlands had RPG elements?

I wouldn't call a handful of stats an RPG element.
You gain Experience from quests and killing things which you use to level up. You can get loot from dead enemies and quests. You can play as four different classes who can specialize in three different aspects each.
I'd call that RPG elements.
I'd call that a shooter with loot.
So you'd call Mass Effect a RPG but not Borderlands.
Prey tell why.

That's where the RPG elements comes in. It isn't an RPG, it is a shooter with RPG elements. "a shooter with loot" is a shooter with elements of an RPG. This isn't about FPSRPGS, it's FPS's with RPG elements. Which Borderlands has.

Well my favourite FPS is Dues Ex which has a fair amount of RPG elements. Also really enjoyed Borderlands as well.

Personally really liked Dues Ex's take on the RPG thing buy having the player gain points (kind of like XP) to upgrade various different attributes like gunplay, hacking, and a whole host of other bits and pieces.
Deus Ex is an RPG, just with a first-person perspective.

Don't really feel like it.

Too much typing.

Buuuut, sufficient to type one word, I guess: roleplay.
if im drunk and still typing (bad idea i know) then you can tell us...

Yes, I find that customization is always welcome. Allowing the player multiple playstyles and ways to deal with challenges is a great thing in almost any game and adds to the replay value. I'm not saying it should be shoehorned in, but it can enhance the FPS genre a lot and help take it out of the monotonous rut it's been stuck in for the past several years.

More RPG elements would be great. I'm starting to get very bored with FPS' single player. I would say more like Mass Effect, but that's third person. So something more like Fallout 3 would be nice, just with better shooting mechanics.
Sounds like someone needs to try out the mods for Fallout 3.

Try the nexus website.

As poorly implemented and shallow as they were in Borderlands, those were indeed RPG elements.
I assume that the entire reason to put RPG elements into a game (be shooter, puzzle, battler) is to introduce some order of ROLE to the game.
If these elements aren't accomplishing that, then why are they there?

Thanks for this, you're helping me win a very important argument, with very important consequences.

the way I see it is that decent story lines and well written characters seem to be elements of RPG's so that could only be a good idea

but as far as upgrades go your guns should work no matter what
like you should be able to upgrade your health if you wanted to tank damage and use a machine gun
or upgrade stealth if you wanted to use a sniper undetected
upgrade speed if you wanted to be able to sprint from cover to cover
upgrade strength if you wanted to go akimbo with bigger guns
stuff like that
but you should only get enough points to upgrade 1 element all the way

and also give character customization further then skin tone and facial structure
you should be able to make your body build as your starting class
EG: if you make a big buff mother fucker they should be more inclined to the strength or health upgrades
or a lithe skinny guy would get start off with speed or stealth points

It's nice, but only if done right. I don't mind having to use weapons to get better with them, but don't force me to grind with them so I can start hitting the broad side of a barn from 20 feet with a sniper rifle.

I say definitely, be it as light as Bioshock or as heavy as Fallout 3 they can let you play how you want to play, add to the replay value and give you other options besides shooting everyone.

It really does add more variety, especially when you can combine parts to make new weapons- I love doing that.

I literally thought that this thread was about Rocket Propelled Grenages and if people like them in FPSs or not. I then read about bioshock and mass effect and thought WTF? I then realised the true meaning of it and I loved Borderlands, it was an almost perfect game...almost.

I can take them or leave them. I just have one rule, however- Don't make me grind. If I wanted to grind, I'd play some sort of MMO-thing, not a shooter. Mass Effect, BioShock and Fallout 3 all were good shooter/RPG games (some more RPG than others). Borderlands was kinda fun, but it got old fast.

Then what would you call RPG elements
