When you play an RPG where the 4 options in the poll are equally balanced (eg Fallout 3) which is your preferred style of play?

For myself, I'm a Stabby person, this applies to FPS's as well for me. In games like COD or L4D I find myself using melee attacks more often. I suppose I appreciate the "spectacle" more from up close.

Stealth - I don't react well to being charged by tonnes of giant monsters.......it usually ends in my death or a hasty retreat to the nearest town.

stealthy, mostly, with a fine-tuned amount of talky. there's no satisfaction as pickpocketing a rich merchant and then haggling with him until he gives you twice the money you'd've had to pay for the blasted thing in the first place xD
ah, RPGs are fun ;D

I usually play stabbing and bashing. In Oblivion I combine that with stealth, though lately I'm more into throwing fireballs at people and using other magic, like a 100% cameoflage spell (still combined with stealth and some occasional stabbing).

Depends entirely too much on the system being used. What are the ranged options? What are the melee options? How useful is stealth, how useful is talking?

I consider Fallout 3 to be an FPS with RPG elements in it. Rather, this option sohuld have been asked about Fallout 2. Talky with bashy , sneaky with shooty etc.

For that case, in an RPG I usually end up with good talky, bad/medium stealthy, with a balanced mix of shooty and bashy or magic/engineer/whatever speciality.

Is there a technique for playing 'traveler?'
I just walk around until I get bothered.
Then I make them stop shooting.
One way or the other.

Stealthy/Talky mix. Sadly a lot of games don't let me silver tongue my way out of situations as much as I like so I have to fall back on stealth.

In D&D I play a smooth talking, stealthy Rogue with a high Charisma score. ;)

I'm more of a talky with the people, and then bashy the monster with my enormous warhammer....I tried to do stealthy in Fallout 3, but how are you suppose to do that when most of the areas are wide-open with little cover, at least Oblivion had nice little spots and corridors and trees to hide behind...also somehow the guy I was planting a live grenade in his pants spotted me before he exploded, even though he was asleep at the time, and the same with everyone else.

Stealthy. Nothing is more satisfying than sneaking up to an enemy, then sticking a grenade into their pocket.

Sneak'n'snipe. Nothing says "I hate you" like someone just keeling over without the guy next to them even knowing where the arrow/bullet/lightning bolt came from.
