I like both, started gaming with JRPG's, and branched into WRPG's after highschool with the likes of Bladers Gate 2. JRPG's have certainly made a horrible transition to the current HD console gen and it's really a shame. Personally I feel the PS3/360 power is a little excessive for JRPG's and only inflates cost of development, plus there's this silly impression that the games are 'stale' causing JRPG developers to try and change too much which fails to impress a new audience and loses the core fanbase.

Personally I wish they'd make more games like Dragon Quest VIII of the PS2. To me that's the 'Mario 64' of JRPG's, as it maintains all the elements of an old school JRPG while incorporating better 3d technology to improve the overall experience.

WRPGs because very few JRPGs come out on PC and most of the ones that look very appealing to me are for the PS3 which I don't own. Although to be honest more JRPGs that appeal to me have been released than WRPGs, it's just I haven't had the chance to try them.

I like both but prefer JRPGs because of the varied settings they often come with. While the WRPG "medival england" setting can be used good, It is boring when it's the only setting that is used.

Had you asked a few months ago, I would have said that I was growing bored of JRPGs. However, I just went through Persona 3 and 4, which have radically restored my faith in the genre and left me wanting more games like them.

I prefer WRPG's but I'll play both. The only thing is there are way too many JRPG's that suck balls hard, it's rare for them not to suck anymore.

I have no problem playingh JRPG's, there's just so few I can stand. FFX, Lost Odyssey, the Fire Emblem series, and i'm pretty sure that's it.

Most of my games are WRPG's.

Jrpg, the only Wrpg I really enjoyed was Dragon Age and Fallout 3 to a slightly less degree.

To me starting out Jrpgs were the definition of rpg, things like Diablo were more like action games with fantasy and math-inspired combat systems than rpgs. No cut scenes or dialogue or turn based combat.

After some time my understanding widened but my preferences never wavered, I like what I like.

I'm a hardcore WRPG fan. There's really not much else you can say when my top 5 games list includes Baldur's Gate, Deus Ex, Dragon Age: Origins, and Mass Effect. WRPGs deliver on story (most of the time; I like Morrowind and the older Elder Scrolls games too, but I hesitate at calling open world sandboxes RPGs; the genre lines are getting a little blurry). WRPGs are also the only way you can go for character customization.

My RPG introduction came at the hands of D&D. To me, crafting and role playing a character is the defining feature of the genre. JRPGs don't have that. You may be able to mess with abilities some times, but their story is completely pre-determined and lack any meaningful input or choices on your part. If I want to play an adventure game, that's fine. But if you're going to call it role playing, than there should be some role playing involved.

both highly, but truth be told i'd enjoy an amazing jrpg over an amazing wrpg any day, i just prefer the style and characters, especially when jrpg goes steampunk, personally i think they do it best by far.

WRPG. I'm much more a fan of the classic fantasy setting and other WRPG-centric settings. I also enjoy the higher level of choice and freedom that they tend to have.

Although I don't have anything against JRPGs either. I like less of them but there are still good ones out there.

You forgot "Bacon", but I'll forgive you.

I actually have no special preference on where the RPG comes from. If it looks good, I'll buy it. End of story.

Talking about elves and (sic) dwalves makes me wonder; why arent there any half-elf-half-dwarves. In BG 1 there were half-elves, hell, even half-orcs. Where are my bearded legolas's who are beerdrinking hippies with down-to earth humor. WHEEEEERRRE??

i used to play quite a lot of dragon quest when i was a kid but now i really find JRPGs grating and samey, plus as has already been said i quite like the trend of WRPGs to make the main character an avatar for the player.

I liked Final Fantasy before it turned into bubble headed technopunk bullcrap with melodramatic, emo, angsty, pre-teens whining about their mysterious past. Seriously, what sane person could possibly like Final Fantasy 7-13?
I dunno. I liked Final Fantasy 9. And in FF7's defense, I don't think Cloud was so much of an emo but more of a confused prick. Now Squall from FF8? He was an emo, no question.

I play both, but if I really had to choose I'd say jrpg. With Western ones its ether Bethesda or Bioware, There's a lot more companies making jrpgs. They simply make more of them although I think that opinion may be from not playing a lot of pc exclusives.

I enjoy both genres. Yes, both will have their cliches and tropes but I still enjoy them.

I voted for both. I do by far prefer my JRPGs, which make up the vast majority of my game library, but there are many WRPGs that I absolutely love as well.

I can't say I understand the whole 'All JRPGs are the same thing/All JRPGs are filled with angsty, spiky hair teenagers' thing though.
I can look at my shelf and pick out a variety of games that have more than a bunch of whiny teenagers, or break away from the stereotypical JRPG mold.
Maybe this is because I have played more than two of them.
