Savage: The Battle for Newerth (XR) and Natural Selection do this RTS/FPS blend best. What keeps people playing are good game mechanics, while both games are almost free from RPG elements - which is a big plus IMO.

NO! KEEP FPS OUT OF MY FAVORITE GAME GENRES!!!

Seriously, why is FPS creeping into all my favorite game genres these days?!?!? If I wanted to play an FPS game, I would play an FPS game. And I don't want to play any because (full disclosure) I abhor FPS, it's my least favorite game genre ever. I would rather play sports games.

[small]Oh, well, I still have fighting games, it's just about impossible to incorporate FPS into that.[/small]

You missed Battlezone.

One of the greatest games ever made.
Ninja'd! Battlezone was incredible but the problem was you really couldn't trust your AI controlled units to do squat. Still, it was an idea that I'd like to see explored.

It is worth noting that a number of modern games try to merge the two for online play. MAG for instance has differing levels of command available. The trouble is, you really can't force an action on the part of your players. All you can do is place a carrot where you want them to go and hope they bite. Still, with effective commanders in the game, an all but impossible task suddenly becomes trivial.

that guy has alot of bitching to do and most of it is wrong, besides, when you look at the number of people who played them then its obvious that despite its more simplified tech tree people like savage 2 better since you can still get a game of that going, I could never get a game of the first savage going that wasnt just between humans since no one actually bought the game (you had to buy it to play beasts)

Have you tried the Half-Life 2 mod called Overwatch?

Essentially, one team (the Rebels as seen in HL2) is controlled by a team of people playing it like an FPS while the other team (the Combine Overwatch) are commanded by a person playing it like an RTS, summoning and commanding units.

It's actually a very fun mod. Even if you're like me and suck at the RTS half of it, there is still fun to be found in the FPS part since you're not just fighting waves of AI any more, now it's waves of commanded AI.

Battalion wars was a great Third Person Shooter RTS mix.
It could work for multiplayer if the RTS player controlled the various goons while players were a little tougher. You could do a game of CTF with to players controlling bases RTS style with a team of FPS players under them.

You could only play Humans vs Humans in Savage 1 because you played only the demo. The game is freeware since 5 years. You could have just downloaded the full game in order to play on regular Humans vs Beasts servers.
What the guy claims in his video is correct IMO. Savage 2 died in less than a year because it got almost no support from the Savage 1 community (due to the reasons presented in the video). Then S2Games made it F2P which attracted new players. The player base of both Savage games is about the same, however the competitive scene of Savage 1 is much more alive.

Mainstream?
No I don't think so but there is at least a niche appeal and I'd play that type of game.

The main problem is people are jerks and if say one player was giving orders how many would actually follow them?
Not many I'd wager, point of fact I know give Savage a try sometime (if you haven't already) you will always get either an idiot at the helm and/or everybody will run off and do their own thing.

A single player one where you alternate between an overhead command structure and taking direct control ()a la Dungeon Keeper) may be the best way to handle it.

wrong, I could play more then just the humans, since I have the boxed copy of savage on on my shelf, Im looking at it right now, its in a box and on my shelf, the problem was no one effin played a real copy of it, and I never had a hard time getting a game of savage 2, granted I havent played it in awhile but I doubt its still hard to get a game, I just got tired of it taking 5 minutes to load the first game

Ok ladies and gentleman i say that one game that deserves to be rts and fps is warhammer... imagine it you making the troops that would aid you in battle... problably more like a Battlegrounds with a rts element implemented on it..... i think it would be a major sucess....

I find it odd that people still posted here, but anyways....

I found a video on a supposed developing game that is related what we're talking about, although I really don't like how it practically looks like Halo and doesn't seem like it's going to actually mix the two genres together and seems like they're going for "FPS with minimal RTS aspects in it". Maybe I'm wrong, but it certainly seems like it.
