My favourite RTS of all time: Warcraft 3
My current favourite RTS: Anno 1404
But most new RTSes that arn't heavily based on building, massive armies (Like Anno 1404 or Total war) are starting to piss me off because of the hit-and-run thing is very overused.

I was never into RTSs, but I loved Sins of a Solar Empire, one of my all time favorite games. I also really enjoyed DoW1, great game.
Never could get into AoE or Supreme Commander though.

Red Alert seiries are the best in my opinion, but I'm worried that EA are ruining it...
How so? The series has always been about goofy, over-the-top stories (hmm... time travel, mind control, battles on the moon...) and terrible, hammy acting (I don't know who plays the president in Yuri's Revenge, but he's a great example). And it's awesome for it. In my eyes, it's gotten progressively better.
I've heard EA messed up the balance in CAC3, which leavs my paranoid about RA3. Since it sounds like you've played, are my worries muisguided?
Well Red Alert 3 is fuckin awesome just play it and don't get a console version.

I think that too many RTS's are focusing on either slow base building (Age of Empires) or are too focused on hardcore heart-pounding speed (Halo Wars); they don't strike a good balance. Starcraft, Warcraft, and the original Dawn of War are the only games I can think of that made a good balance between speed and base building.
I agree. But if its going to be Empire-Building, they should at least make it more of a simulation, AoE just doesn't do it right. I see Halo Wars as an introduction to RTS'.

Age of Mythology is my favorite RTS of all time, and my choice for the 3rd best game ever.

but RTS´ took 4 steps backward with Dawn of War 2, which claims to be an RTS, but is obviously an Action-RPG.

I like any game where I can build things like cities or bases.

The only RTS games I don't like so much are the ones where you only have units and dont really get to make bases

well in stronghold when you put archers on the wall Then theres actually a bloody use for the wall
the archers downstairs will just be hitting the wall and once in a while a archer on top of it
you can make traps like stake pits and tar/oil pits the last once you can actualy set fire to by giving your achers a brazier to light their arrows

you actually need to create the weapons for your soldiers and have horses ready for your horsemen in the stables

you can have tunnelers who can attempt to break down the walls of the enemy you can have engineers who built you siege weapons and defences (like pots of Oil on your walls)
there's actually a need to produce food or there won't be people in your town there's also a need in variation to keep your people happy and also build gardens or torture things to keep them in check
so in fact you're doing all the things that should have been done in the real time

And In company of heroes well I dunno how to explain that exactly It's just what it is[/quote]

Wow that sounds quite good, I will look for a review and might pick up a copy
(This thread is making my list of games huge and my wallet tiny)

I feel sorry for people that cant see the skill in a game and so they just bash it.
Well lets take AOE3 for a good example
As the french you can win 90% of matches by just spamming pikemen with a decnet amount of upgrades

I never got into AOE3, AOE 2 was much better, However asuming the counters work the same then scout and when you are sure that the are training pikemen with an aim to spam start creating archers and siege... Just remember scout and adapt.
Yeah but when you can spawn a pikeman in less then 5 seconds, then it gets frustrating
