Hello again Escapist!

Recently, i've been witnessing alot of hating against the game Runescape.
More than usually, at any rate.

Now, i've thinking: Why does people hate this game? Why does it have such a bad reputation around the interwebs?
Personally i play it when i'm bored and wanna' re-live some of the stuff i did when i first started gaming, and i don't think it's that bad a game.

But now, since i really want to know, i ask you:
Do you hate or love Runescape?
And most importantly: Why?

Sincerely
Dragonson

I used to play Runescape simply because it's a free MMO with enough to do even as a non-member. As a member there's more than enough to do, no level caps, an easier to use interface, and you don't HAVE to get together a massive amount of people to beat a dungeon or quest. Maybe one other person, but you don't need a whole troupe to beat any quest. In my opinion it was better engineered than WoW in many ways.

Personally, I used to play RS for a long time, and had membership for a while. However I grew tired of it and eventually quit. Mainly because of one thing, No End Game.

Personally I prefer my games to have a little bit of an endgame element, and rs has very little. It's like WOW with all the endless grinding except with worse graphics and in the end you don't get to kill the Lich King. Sure there's big badies but there is no story line behind them.

A long long long long long long long time ago I used to play it heavily but then I grew up and realised it was utter shit.

Never played it, but that's more because I hear it is largely unfair to non-premium members. I would also say because I associate it with annoying 12 year olds, but the same can be said for one of my all time favorite games, Halo, so I'm just gonna stick with the balance issue I hear about.

I played for a month or so a long time ago and thought it was okay.

Isn't it programmed entirely in Java? That's impressive!

In all honesty I've played it several get bored, and then go back to it on a new character whenever I discover a friend of mine still plays it. But now.... I don't know, I guess I just fell out of games about grinding useless skills. I'm just being honesty, in Runescape all you do is for example: chop down trees, fill inventory, and then make a conga line of fireplaces, and then start again. Alright, there are some useful skills mining and then smelting for example but you then have to work on killing another 50 goblins or whatever, just to wear your bronze helm of poor blacksmithmanship. So I guess I just don't find it very fun. But if they can make the game feel like it has reason maybe I'll play t again.... if I can remember my character name.

I still play, just finished a dungeoneering raid as it happens, it's a nice little RPG, and whilst I understand why not everyone loves it, I find it quite enjoyable.

I think it's boring. It takes advantage of the ordinary compulsive levelling up most people do when they play an MMO, and makes it phenomenally boring.

The other thing that really pisses me off is that they censor so many words (like 'damn', 'crap' and 'penis'), and that players will report you for saying any of them just once, even though they're censored.

Just as a heads up, they've stopped that now. Why, only yesterday I told someone to "get their arse in gear" and not a single star appeared in that sentence. Of course, the filter is still in place, it's just much more lenient.

Yay, I guess that makes me a fanboy.

room for improvement, if it didn't feel like it was trying to waste your time half the time it would be really good for a free mmorpg.

Oh, that's interesting. Maybe they're trying to drop the 'this game is for 10-year-olds' image...

It was free and fun to play with friends for a bit, but eventually it fell out of favor for more complex MMOs. Isn't that how it always goes with Runescape?

I still play it sometimes, more out of lack of any better games to play than anything else.

For a game made completely with Java, Jagex did a pretty good job with it. My major complaint would be the grinding issue, but that is a problem in every MMO there's ever been, so it's kinda a moot point.

I get the feeling many people hate it more because of it's reputation for life stealing than from recent experience of actually playing it.

It would seem that way, especially with the epic new hadouken magic animations, but they've also thrown out a blog about "signature heroes", who are apparently a bunch of recurring characters who smell like the Power Rangers or something, and of course we get to be one of them...

Yeah, for every update that makes the game cooler, there seems to be one designed to make the player's character feel like "the chosen one!", which was never something that made me like RuneScape. I liked being "just some dude".

I go on occasionally is what i'm trying to say.

Runescape...hated that game with a passion.I still hate that game.i was hacked like 3 times. The password recovery is the most retardedly complex system ever created.I recieved 2 death threats on that game and couldn't report them because of their damn repoting system. You have to continuosly click an enemy to attack. The graphics are shit.if you die you lose everything but the 3 most valuable items you have which doesn't include gold.In order to cast a spell you have to have the Runes necessary so theres no way to be a mage unless your rich.not to mention all the member shit you can't access and even when you can access it theres a chance you can't do anything there. The quests are needlessly long and complex. And to top it all off nearly every person playing that game is a dick.

Uh, no you don't.

The graphics are shit.
It's made with Java.

if you die you lose everything but the 3 most valuable items you have which doesn't include gold.
You should bring food with you then.

In order to cast a spell you have to have the Runes necessary so theres no way to be a mage unless your rich.
Runecrafting.

The quests are needlessly long and complex.
The only long quest I can think of is Dragon Slayer, and that's meant to be the hardest one to do.

And to top it all off nearly every person playing that game is a dick.
Yeah I got nothing there.
