Poll: Russian tattoos

A couple of things about tattoos:

1. Getting a tattoo is painful and expensive. Getting a tattoo removed is significantly more painful and expensive. How much do you really want this? My suggestion is that, especially if you want to get a big, difficult to cover tattoo, wait for two years and see if you still want it.

2. Russian prison tattoos have a specific cultural meaning. Are you sure that's a meaning you want to espouse, especially since you haven't earned it yourself? (I'm assuming you're not currently planning on being incarcerated in Russia, of course -- if you are, well then, go for it.) Furthermore, are you sure that's a meaning you want other people to think you espouse?

3. Russian criminals don't look kindly on people who get tattoos without earning them. You probably won't run into any trouble, but...

I think prison tattoos are fascinating and beautiful, but I kind of think it's something you shouldn't get unless you're actually part of the criminal culture.

If you want to get a tattoo in the same style I think that's totally fine. You shouldn't absolutely replicate the tattoo on an inmate for several reasons:

1) It probably would implicate you in something illegal

2) Tattoos are art and complex tattoos are usually gotten with the desire to be unlike anyone else and that should be respected

3) If #2 is not respected, at least realize you might get the shit beaten out of you on the off chance you might run into the Russian mafia if you steal their exact patterns.

I was wondering is it ok to get Russian prison tattoos if you have note been to Russian prison. I personally think they look cool, but I don't know if I should get one.

Fuck no. That is a really, really, REALLY bad idea. That's one secretive and hardcore culture, you don't just borrow things from cultures like that, especially ones where you have to 'earn' your ink and the ink has specific meanings. It's an open invitation for anyone from that culture to pop your skull.

This has bad idea written all over it. As a person with tattoos who works with convicts, you need to be very careful about what you get done. It can totally be misconstrued into them believing that not only are you an ex russian prisoner but that you also belong to X gang.
