I use to play Wurm back in the day when that was all we had in the non-space Sandbox genre, and I have started playing in the H1Z1 Alpha/Beta and like it a lot, but I haven't gotten around to Rust, which I hear can be a little brutal. Does anyone have thoughts on how to the two compare?

Rust is super annoying, your house quickly dissapears in a few days and can pretty much be guranteed to be raided every night on any server with a decent amount of people. Since you have a sleeping body that can be killed and looted you usually end up starting over every day.

I just wish I could load a solo server or something on H1Z1 every now and then. PVE is basically singleplayer, except people can wreck your home, loot your supplies and steal your car.

Don't get me wrong, I like the PVP servers for a challenge. But every now and then I just want to deal with zombies and crazy bears by myself.

Really depends on what you're looking for. Most of these sandbox survivals are in an incomplete state, so a lot of things are subject to change. I suggest getting none of these and holding off until they go gold. The exception is if you have a group of friends to roll with, which alleviates some of the disappointment you'll find yourself dealing with in the games. If you like building, check out Minecraft, especially with mods. If you just want simple survival, try Don't Starve for single player, and DS: Together for multiplayer. For the zombie aspect, definitely look at State of Decay, which is single player.

Rust - easily. I have a strategy where I build sanctuaries and towns for people to live at, and the entire process gradually fosters a genuine sense of community and camaraderie that I have never seen in other games - that includes games such as WoW.

Before Rust, I never gave a single shit about Steam cards and badges. But after Rust, I found myself investing in badges to upgrade my f-list capacity.

H1Z1 might get there or beyond one day... but today is not that day.

Rust is very brutal.

The only way I stayed solo and harmfree from others was tributes to player factions in the server. I wouldn't say every time you go on, you'll be shot on sight ... most of the time you will get robbed.

I haven't played in months, before the new engine - so it might have changed

The Rust devs changed the system requirements halfway through EA development, so I'd say avoid it just based on that little bit of shadiness. And Garry is a class-A asshole who treats his customers with open disdain. Besides, the game gets pretty boring after a few hours.

H1Z1? No idea, but the reviews on Steam don't paint a pretty picture.

I am actually loving Ark: Survival Evolved. Still a little buggy but its early access.

I'd say don't play either but if you really want one of them pick Rust because there's a chance of your character having a massive dick.

Really though neither are anything special.
