Im beginning to sound like a broken record it seems but the original Resident Evil. Playing through the first time on the PS in that damn mansion was one of the scariest video game experiences ever. I don't know if anything I play will ever top that.

None.
The only game in which I have ever been truly afraid of anything is Fallout 3.
What can I say? The game made me like myself, and the other characters around me, to the point that I am afraid of them dying.
That, and the isolation. When I'm walking through sewers that I know I've cleared of all life, every little noise scares the shit out of me.
Maybe it's just because I've never actually played Fatal Frame or Silent Hill, though. Even Bioshock had some great horror moments, I've heard.

As I state in every thread like this, Fatal Frame.
But of course. Is there another option? Nothing scares me after playing the trilogy back-to-back. Specially III, with Kyouka wandering about and trying to track down while moaning and yawning.

Silent Hill 4 scared me to the point where I declined to play it any further.
I beat it yesterday and for that...I didn't sleep.
Fucking...victim..7&8....
Do try Fatal Frame, but I warn you: if Silent Hill 4 scared you that much, FF will leave you emotionally scarred.

Yeah Fatal frame does seem to get excluded from alot of these polls. I'd like to see Fatal Frame 2, Condemned Criminal Origins, The Suffering, Sanitarium, Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth.
There's another one. Call of Cthulhu is not only very faithfully adapted, but in some ways scarier than the original story itself (Lovecraft was great, but there are some things that not even his strange, meaningless descriptions could do any justice to)

I've heard alot about this game and I just love horror so if it really is good I think I'll get it.

If SH4 was too much for you then I don't think you'll even make it for ten minutes in Fatal Frame. Seriously, it's the only game I stopped playing for a while because I was getting worked up and needed a break.
It was only Victim 7&8 that scared me to that point not anything else, I just hate those fuckers.

This is the second thread of this in 2 or 3 weeks. But the only game to scare me was when I was playing Fable 2 at 3 in the morning and I entered the seemingly cozy cabin then DEATH!!!

system shock 2. creepiness is when the biomass zombies of the many still remember you, tell you to run away as they attack you and beg you to kill them.

Well, I've not played Call of Cthulhu, System Shock, Fatal Frame, Eternal Darkness, Clock Tower, The Suffering etc, but the scariest game I have played was Condemned: Criminal Origins.

And ho damn, was it scary.

Project Zero 3. One of the only games to make me exclaim "fuck that" and reach for the off button.

This a billion times. I can't even brave the first level, I don't know how I would be able to cope with the hospital or fairground... Mind you it's the only scary game I've played apart from Bioshock.

ok.... bio shock took the gold for me.
when you have a plastic surgen surrounded by blood and bodies, a woman petting a gun like a baby, ghost memories, and a part of the game where you go into a dark basement with flickering lights and a wax statue and a chair in the corner. you walk over to the chair then turn around to find the statue standing an inch away from you..... thats freaky. im lucky i had the
shot gun equipped cuz i jumped ten feet and my fingers snapped down on the trigger buttions.
kaboom......

I'm gonna be incredibly boring and stereotypical and say it. I don't play horror games much, and Resi 4 wasn't all that scary, so I have to say it.

Dead Space.

I know it's no Fatal Frame or Eternal Darkness and that it's probably not very scary compared to those but I haven't played those so I have to go with Dead Space.
I'm normally open to other people's opinions but...

DEAD SPACE.

Holy crap have you not ever played any actual horror game in your life?

Dead Space was so by the numbers I kept suspecting that a zombie would pop out with "Cliche #290" on his chest.

Lord they shoved all the 'surprises' in your face so hard you'd think none of them had ever been around another person. "Here just touch the surprise I promise only the tip."

Man...seriously.

The scariest game I ever played would have to be Resident Evil but that was because I was young and silly.

There hasn't been a good horror game other than maybe some of the Silent Hills. It's mostly because the medium makes it too easy to make over the top bullshit with no substance.

FEAR gets honorable mention for doing a few unexpected things when I was playing.
