So with Guillermo del Toro announcing a new Horror game. I was thinking, there are not a lot of scary games isn't. Maybe there are but I didn't notice them.
So, for you what games are damn scary?
You can also point out which game is not scary but everyone is talking about that.

FOR EXAMPLE.
I think one scary game is Condemned.
One not scary game is Dead space. NOT FOR ME

I know everyone else talks about them but the Penumbra games (minus Requiem) and Amnesia are pretty damn scary.

Condemned 1 still holds scariest game ever for me.

The enemies are real people, driven mad. That shit could really happen,

Play Minecraft,then think.

YOU are the only human on the planet.
Yet there are obviously humanoid Zombies and Skeletons.
THEY were once YOU.
The Zombies look EXACTLY LIKE YOUR DEFAULT SKIN,only the flesh is green.
When you die,you respawn. You can never die,and must live forever and alone in this death world.
Think about it.

Also,go into a dark tunnel with a stone sword, and 16 torches. Psychological horror at it's finest.

Fatal Frame.

Why? Because horror is embedded in the game mechanics. For a game to be truly scary, it has to be unable to transpose into a different setting and keep the gameplay unchanged. Dead Space could be repackaged and repurposed into any setting, and you could keep the exact same gameplay, its the same for all ther games on the list, with Amnesia being arguably the only other exception.

Fatal Frame is scary because you HAVE to experience fear to perform well in the game.

Thank you for giving me a bunch of new games to try out (if any of these are on PS3).

I've never played it, but I heard that Aliens (a computer game, I don't think it was on any system) was really scary. You're a first person shooter and walking around dark corridors as aliens pop out at you.

My buddy tried showing it to me but as it turns out his computer will no longer support it :-(

You might check out a game on the PS2 called Rule of Rose. The gameplay is meh but the atmosphere it creates never fails to scare the crap out of me.

Condemned 1 or Amnesia: Dark Descent.
Both are ridiculously scary compared to everything else I've played that people have recommended to me.

I am so glad nobody voted for Dead Space yet. It's not scary at all. In fact, I was just playing the DS2 demo, and I jumped once because I had the volume up and that big thing crashed down. But not once did I feel any tension.

I'd say Fatal Frame/Project Zero, It has all that lovely Japanese psychlogical horror that gets under your skin plus the feeling of helplessness that only comes about when you feel completly unarmed (I know youy're not but it's a freaking camera! would you feel safe armed with that alone?) Silent hill also delivers on that, but 2 was too easy and had too much ammo despite having the best story, and the later ones just kinda suck.

Honerable mentions:

Penumbra
Amnesia
Call of Cthullu: DCotE
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines (it had it's moments!)

System Shock 2 is top tier scary, even though it's from last century. Dead Space is a hollow knock off, with jump scares instead of foreboding, tension and dread.

Recommendation: replace Dead Space with System Shock 2 on the poll. Doubtful anyone who is of the recommended age to play Dead Space will find it scary.

Probably Condemed. Defiantly almost got my pants wet. Amnesia is pretty alright. But just doesn't have the right atmosphere to truly make me sequel at those moments.

Bloodlines however, the music for the scary times really gave me the chills.

Truer words never spoken. I could predict almost every moment that was supposed to be "scary" in that game. All it was were enemies going "BARGH" at ya face every three seconds. It happened so often I was over it on the first level.
