Condemned for me. It might not be the most solid game as far as gameplay but I'll be damned if the Mannequin room didn't scare the shit out of me and my friend. Lights off, lights on, we had to pause the game it was so bad. 20 minutes later we worked up the courage to continue on. Oh and the rabid bear in condemned 2 is pretty bad too.

I'm pretty much scared by any game ever, but Fatal Frame is one series that I absolutely dread playing. That makes it my number one.
In a lot of other games you're armed and can fight back monsters; in those that you can't, you can run and hide. With Fatal Frame, however, you have nothing but a camera and you MUST face your enemy, no matter how terrifying or threatening, in order to progress.
I think that is true horror; making the player face their fears!

never played the game, didn't have ps2
Basically...well, it had that one thing that many would say a scary game does not. It had atmosphere. Now, it suffered from bad voice-acting syndrome, but we can get past that. You're a trained operative in an Antarctic facility that is slowly being taken over by unknown creatures, in more ways than one.

Let's see...parasites running about, infecting things...like people for instance. Why? Because unfortunately, all the larger beings were made from people, their genes re-written and their bodies mutated like they exploded from the inside. This pre-dates Dead Space, by the way. So, people are the monsters, but that's not all!

Let's see... The water supply is contaminated to the point where it comes alive... Flesh starts forming on the walls and floors and ceiling... Oh, and speaking of the walls...IT EATS PEOPLE. Yeah, apparently there were people there who were somehow GROWN THROUGH on the molecular level somehow, much like the facility itself. So, the whole place...is being devoured.

When you think about it, that's a VERY fucking scary concept.

I have to agree with minecraft. You could be absolutely fine but as the sun sets a primal fear of the night is awakened and your pissing your pants all the way back to your house.

There was this mod for Doom with an Aliens storyline.
Stuff like when going around a corner a voice would go ... watch those corners, Watch those corners WHATCH THOSE CORNERS!.. followed by eerie silence and shuffling sounds.
And suddenly when you think you are safe, an alien attacks from behind. Scary shiet.

As another thought, when I saw the Starship Enterprice map made in Minecraft, I was scared.
Not sure if links are allowed but do a search on tube for a video and see it for yourself, but the amount of tiles is just scary (millions).

Got a Steam version of a Source game, like Half-Life 2?

Good. Look up Underhell and download right now, and play The House. Seriously, do it now, this post will still be here when you're gone.

...

Back? Good, now, did you notice the way how the house gradually changed to fuck with your sanity, and every time "She" showed up you weren't expecting it and you shit yourself? Or how if you replayed it the events never happened in the same order (if at all) because everything is random?

Gota say im suprised AVP the original pc shooter isnt in there, the marine campaign can be abit nerve racking at times with the hollow emotionless beep from your mostion sensor suddenly pinging, getting louder as you get closer with gun raised and anticipation of xeno's round the next corner... only for you to find its just a malfunctioning door, so you enter the room feeling relaxed abit then bam the roof explodes and they come pooring in. Good times if played in the dark and preferably twitchy from too much coffee.

I got fairly tense playing Dead Space but that may have been because it was the first survival horror game I ever played. Still, the atmosphere in it was good and I found that the lack of a HUD helped draw me in. But I would agree with other posts on this thread that DS2 wasn't scary. It was just an action game where enemies, to quote Yahtzee, jump out at you going abloogy woogy woo.
