You can put anything you want into games. It is (at least sometimes) a storytelling medium. You can depict weird, surreal and horrifying material like you want if it helps bringing a point across or just to entertain.

First off, I'd like to say that it's difficult to tell what the hell is going on in that scene, but if you think it's a rape, then I'm not going to argue with you. It's just not the first thing that jumped into my head.
Wasn't the first thing that jumped into my head too. I first thought he was trying to shove the monster down the sink or something. But he who sat next to me said it was rape, and it made most sense. It was symbolic in a way.
I honestly never saw anything really sexual in that scene.(thank God) To me the scene showed Pyramid Head's dominance over the monsters. Showing the player that he is topdog around here. And wasn't Pyramid head suppose to be some kind of demonic representation of a prison-guard? James' prison.

As far as I know he was a manifestation of James' subconsciousness, created to harm him cause it was his secret desire, because he felt guilt over his dead wife. That's how I rationalize.

Pyramid Head is a physical manifestation of James' need to be punished for murdering his wife, in addition to a manifestation of James' mysogonist thoughts, brought about by what he did to his wife

To this effect, Pyramid Head's cruel and brutal treatment of all the (decidedly female-looking) monsters is symbolic of James' own hatred towards women (whether he knows it or not), and frankly, I see no reason why this should not have occured.

I know rape is a sensitive subject (yet brutal murder isn't for some reason) but happily bludgeoning those creatures to death with a 2x4 and then crying afoul when one of them is sexually abused by another monster strikes me as a bit... hilarious.

Also, Silent Hill 2 is at least 5 years old now (can't remember if it came out in 2001 or 2003), so asking for censorship now is a wee bit late.

Also, looking through the rest of this thread and noting that there is rape in other media, I can only say but a few words: "squeal like a pig"

This isn't the same thing. This is about rape for dramatic and psychological effect, as well as characterization, in horror games, not about getting your fly up to girls who could wear a sign saying "Look at me, I'm hot and easy to catch".

it depends on the game of course. With games become an art form themselves some mature themes should be in them. Of course I don't think everything needs to be displayed graphically... however if it's a horror game then that's the reason why...

I think it's appropriate if it fits the tone of the game, throwing it in there for no real reason is kinda retarded.
Pretty much what I was gonna say.

Devs can do whatever they want with their games. And if it haves a rape scene. It will be rated M.

Simple as that.

Games should never be slaves to public opinion and censorship, if it fits, it fits, if not, it'll get bombed anyway.

Btw: I would have loved to see the Rapelay salespitch to Illusion Soft, not in a macabre way but in a "How do you possibly sell that?!" way.

It really depends how it's used, if it's to reinforce something about a character, fair enough but if it's just there for sake it, then no.Also i don't think they EVER should involve kids

Err, Murder is a worse crime than Rape.

The games industry wouldn't be recognisable without murder, so rapes no problem. IMO.

Well the difference between this scene and all the murdering in videogames is that the killing is done by the player, and obviously the player has the ability to control his actions. This example in Silent Hill is a SCENE, however. And therefore it's no different to what's seen in a lot of mainstream movies or TV. It's not like a mini-game pops up and you're asked to mash a series of buttons like Parappa The Raper.

Those fucked up Japanese rape games are the real problem.

I don't understand why there shouldn't be rape if it helps the story of a game. There's rape in books, films and tv programs. Gaming is just another form of media and should be rated properly. Not censored.

Well, he's James's bottled up rage and sexual frustration. So yeah, the scene is necessary.

If its used to give exposition to the character then its perfectly justified. If its there just because the designers felt like it then its just strange.
