Sci-Fi no question.
I hardly read Fantasy, but almost everything Science-Fiction
Everything Fantasy is ripped from LOTR nowadays, it's mostly 'Dragons and Dwarfs', you know what i mean. And that just gets old.

Plus, i saw Star Wars and Dune when i was like 6 years old. That stuff is burned in my brain.
This (minus the Dune part...I should probably go see that)

Fantasy is all the same thing in the same settings (or extremely similar settings). Sci-Fi is limited only by your imagination and vision of the future (or alternate universe/history, w/e).

Hmm. A good space opera generally beats the crap out of almost any fantasy, so , I guess I have to pick that one. However, to me fantasy seems to be more reliably mid-range, while I have read some god-awful sci-fi. I'm still going to pick sci-fi because there are reasonably reliable ways to determine which books are good, and which aren't.

Right now, Sci-fi. Since a Sci-fi setting don't necessarily exclude fantasy elements, while a fantasy setting usually does(excluding sci-fi elements). There are a few gray-areas (i.e. Steam punkt, which I would rather count towards sci-fi) but a sci-fi story/setting has much more freedom.

I went with the combo option. Love Final Fantasy and some of the Warhammer 40k games. Also IMO the Eberron setting in D&D is kind of a combo.

In general, I think I prefer fantasy, but a lot of the stereotypes and tropes that appear often in fantasy movies, games, and books annoy me. Also, I prefer my fiction to be somewhat more light-hearted than dark in both genres. I think a story is best when it is capable of being serious at the right times but knows that it shouldn't take itself too seriously all the time.

I like both. I tend to read more fantasy than sci-fi, simply because I have been able to find more "good/great" fantasy than "good/great" sci-fi... but Isaac Asimov is one of my favorite authors. Similarly, as an RPG fan, I've got more fantasy than sci-fi in my game collection. And as a writer, I'm more comfortable creating my own fantasy setting, but I've written a few sci-fi stories as well.

And a good mix of the two is always fun. So... yay for indecision!

Definitely Sci-Fi. I don't mind fantasy, but I LOVE a good sci-fi story. Especially the works of Arthur C. Clarke and possibly Isaac Asimov (I haven't read any of his stuff yet, but it sounds pretty damn good).

I quite like the universes of the Final Fantasy games, so I'll go with that.

I know this is going to sound silly, but I fucking hated Dune. It was a slow paced movie about space drugs and a floating fat man with alot of scenes completely DEVOID of any soundtrack whatso ever, especially the bits where it was desperately needed.
Haha, not that your wrong for liking it, brother, just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.

Im still a massive fan of Sci Fi.
Mass Effect is awesome
Warhammer 40k is awesome
Star Wars WAS awesome
and Alien Kicked ass!
What do you mean movie? That abominable thing that they put in the theaters that killed the truly epic saga that is the 20 or so books?

I'm talking about the books of course.
Oh man, I completely forgot about the book series. I'm sure I would have enjoyed them if I hadnt already seen that putrid movie.

"Ethereal and ghost-like sexual deviants" - Episodes of Most Haunted.
"Sentient fungus creatures" - Orks/Tyranids in 40k.
"Technologically gifted but hideously ugly and mutated giants" - Fair enough. I'm stumped.
Huh... didn't know Orks and Tyranids were fungus, but anyway this proves my point. Neither of those are fantasy, one is Sci-Fi and one is...

Wait, what? 0.o
They're both SciFi, as they are both from Warhammer 40k. Nids arent fungus, but all they want is to spread across the galaxy [and eat it. If you dont know what Nids are, you may know their cousin's from the East, The Zerg]. Orks [spelled with a 'K'] are, through and through, walking, sentient lumps of fungus. When they die they release spores that soon develope into more orks if they arent burned.

When both are at their best, I prefer Sci-fi.. Not to say I don't like fantasy, but sci-fi has always just done a better job of holding my attention.

Fantasy appeals to my artistic tastes and desires, but its Science fiction that really gets my engine humming. Fantastical settings an array of species, sentient and not, technology of various flavors.

One of my favorite novels is an omnibus of three novels together that chronicle mankind's struggle to reclaim old territory and riches across the vast void of space, however instead of a fancy comfy space ship they travel around in the space equivalent of Victorian era sea vessels

I tend to prefer sci-fi over fantasy. The closest I really have gone to fantasy was the Pern series by Anne McCaffrey which is kind of a combination of both.

Is it okay if you just like stuff that's well-written? Sufficiently advanced technology being indistinguishable from magic and whatnot.

That being said, for some reason I get the impression fantasy books tend to have more writers that focus on making interesting and involved characters than sci-fi writers, so I prefer fantasy.
