Its hard to say, I really liked Oblivion and the other Elder Scrolls games, but Fallout 3 was one of the best I've played in ages. Prob both for me, though on balance I think Fantasy just wins.

Fantasy has become too predictable and we're already conditioned to it. Newer Sci-Fi games are a lot more imaginative and less reliant on said conditioning. It's a lot more entertaining and interesting to see the different Sci-Fi worlds developers create than Fantasy ones. But ask me this before 2004, and I'd probably say Fantasy.

Both genres of RPGs are great. They both offer something different. I love both.

I love both. I'm a huge fan of KOTOR, Mass Effect and Fallout, but I was getting a bit bored with the cut-and-paste fantasy rpgs until DA:O came along and blew my mind. So kudos to you for making me love swords and sorcery again, Dragon Age.

Sci-Fi, the future is fun...

By fun I mean it's full of war, genocide, and the awesomeness that is cross-species sexual encounters with curiously humanoid looking aliens...

Both, although lately fantasy is getting a little bit overdone and repetitive while sci fi is full of surprises.

I always loved fantasy. Those mystic worlds that you get in the games just beg to be explored and it has such an unique feeling to talk with an elf. I think most of the games I played were fantasy (like Oblivion, Morrowind, Warcraft III, Gothic 1,2 and 3, Trine and many others).

But the Sci-Fi world can be so...addicting at times. I'm not the biggest fan of this genre but damn some games can simply suck me in that I can't leave the PC (such as Mass Effect 1 and 2, Freelancer, Starlancer, Privateer, Fallout etc.).

I simply don't know...I can't decide on any O.O

I prefer Science Fiction in my RPG. But I also sometimes like Science Fantasy type things.

I feel that the scifi rpgs have more originality because all western fantasy games have the same recipe

1. start off killing rats
2. have some orcs/ orc like creature/ or demons as evil doers
3. elves are noble
4. dwarfs are skilled craftsman with beards and like beer
5. humans are racist pricks
6. a quest that brings them all together to dispatch the evil and then pretend it never happened
fixed

Is there really much of a difference? They seem to be almost the same only in sci-fi the different races come from different planets instead of different kingdoms and the 'magic' is usable be anyone who can press a button. I guess 'fantasy' also uses a lot less creativity when it comes to creature creation too. Okay, Sci-fi for my vote.

Love them both! But am going to have to go with Sci-Fi for one reason and one reason only, Tolkien. Every fantasy book or game is essentially based of Tolkien world. Dwarfs are short guys who grow there beards and get drunk, Elves are blondies who run around in the woods and make piece with the animals, it's all the same we have seen this before. Sci-Fi doesn't have that sort of constriction. The only fantasy series that breaks away from the usual trend is the Elder Scrolls series but even then you can find trace's.

Sci-fi RPG's are cooler, they re less common and have actually unique themes rather than the same generic themes of fantasy. On that note, I considered FF and most every other JRPG to be fantasy (the upcoming infinite space being the exception because...well, its in space and based off one of my favorite sci-fi novels).

All good points guys.

P.S when I say Fallout I mean ALL the fallout games. 1, 2 AND 3.
If you haven't played the originals then you are missing out!

I have always been more drawn to fantasy rather then Sci-Fi.I have no idea why, but I've been that way since I was a child.

Since every fantasy is trying to be a JRR fantasy, I've really gotten tired of them.

Right now Sci-fi just seems to have more freshness involved.

That's not a fantasy RPG thing. That is a J. R. R. Tolkien.
J. R. R. Tolkien is also the father of the fantasy genre.

Not all fantasy RPGs are like that. Demon's Souls is a perfect example of that.

Anyway, fantasy RPG all the way. Though a hybridizations of the 2 is something I want to see.

How about a fantasy RPG that takes place in modern times with todays technology...and magika. + Dragons, elfs, dwarfs, etc.

SOMEONE MAKE THAT GAME, NOW!
