You know, I always was of the same opinion. I'd see it on television and assume it was just an overpriced novelty for the idle rich to waste money on. I was always more of a fan of Crown Royale if I wanted whiskey. It's smooth and it's the only whiskey I was ever able to just sip straight without a mixer of some sort.

I only ever gave Scotch an honest chance because a friend of mine urged me in to it. About a year ago I tried it for the first time. Like Crown, I found it smooth and flavorful but with none of the burn that comes with a lot of whiskey. It was like a caress on the cheek where most straight liquor is more akin to a punch in the nose.

At this point I view Scotch as a fun indulgence. Not something I can, or would want to, drink all the time. But on occasion it's a nice treat.

I've never had JD "Honey" before. I have to admit, I'm not a fan of JD's whiskeys. It's not that they're bad even. It's just tied to an unfortunate memory from when I was much much younger and I've never been able to get over it. Once something violently ejects itself from your body, it's hard to view it in a favorable light ever again. At least for me. Like many people my age (40+), I looked up to a lot of the rock-n-roll icons of the 80s. Slash in particular. And his ever present bottle of Jack Daniels made me think it was super cool and I should pound it like tap water. Obviously, this was a mistake that nature was quick to fix by causing me to make many a horrible gurgling sounds in reverence to the porcelain lord.

Pedantic I know, but scotch != bourbon.
That's not pedantic, that's a legitimate mistake on my part. I'll fix it. No idea why I put that there, I know better.

Well I have some idea... the topic of the thread... I was "tasting" a few too many perhaps. :)

Glenfiddich, generally around 16, seems to be to my taste. Thing is, I really have to be in the mood for it. I'm not much of a drinker, by any stretch, so if I'm not feeling scotch, it tends to burn a little bit too much to be enjoyable.

Dont care Scotch, myself. I prefer Canadian Whisky, Vodka, and the occasional Schnapps. And the occasional Moscato.

i guess actually being scottish makes something like scotch more meh. its exciting to outsiders but when youve lived there and you get stereotyped with it and its doesnt really have an appeal

theres many a time where ive necked JD like its tap water and it never ends well but i never learn. i start drinking JD and coke and everytime i get a bit drunk and theres always one person that says "i dare you to drink it straight" so i have a glug and it burns like hell but after the first glug i get used to it and before you know it i demolished half a litre straight from the bottle. this mainly happens when i go to peoples stupid parties (usually my student friends) because they cant afford to buy drinks all night in a club they decide to have "pre-drinking" parties and insist on stupid drinking games. I for one cannot stand drinking games because i am good at them so i never get drunk so i compensate by just drinking while everyone else plays and needless to say i can demolish a bottle of jack quicker than they can drink their drinks

I am afraid not! I could never get the taste for it... although I repeatedly try!

I have a bottle of Chivas Regal in my bar globe for guests though, and if we have a round of scotch I sneak Disarono into my own glass, and then hide behind a veil of shame as I drink it's sweet almondy goodness!

Well it was Germany so I was drinking beer >.>

And more importantly I don't really drink scotch sooo... Sorry? XD

I really only drink bourbon and "normal" whiskey. Also wine.
I thought scotch was normal whiskey!? :S

I'll drink it if someone else has it, but it's not my first choice. If I do drink it I drink it straight, alcohol tastes bad and mixing it never gets rid of that terrible taste.

OK, with the PSA out of the way, who else among the Escapist are scotch drinkers? Aficionados? Or are you interested in enjoying this particular style of whiskey? If you're already a fan, do you have a favorite brand? Or a favorite region of <a href=http://www.scotlandwhisky.com/about/single-malt-scotch-whiskyregions>the 5 producing scotch regions?

I have a small bottle of Scotch in my desk drawer for emergencies or visits from friends or if I'm feeling practically suicidal. I don't drink it often.

You know, a regional stereotype isn't always a bad thing. I mean, I live in Texas and yeah that kind of sucks some times. Everyone thinks I must be a republican and a cowboy and own an oil well. But this is where Shiner Bock beer was born... and that makes up for most of the bad stuff!

I have never had tried Scotch, actually.

I have had Whisky, Gin and Vodka, but Scotch is something I have never had yet. Don't worry, I am relatively new to this drinking thing (I am 23, for verification), so give it some time, and I'm sure I will find it and hopefully enjoy it. I seem to have no problem enjoying most, if not all alcoholic beverages.

Only if someone offers me some, and even then I won't have much. Not a big fan of most alcoholic beverages outside of beer.

I'm not much of a scotch drinker. I never liked the flavor but that might have been because the only stuff I could get my hands on was cheap crap. Now that I'm older and have the means available so I'm trying some of the better quality varieties. So far, MacAllan 12 year is my favorite. I've got some 12 year Glen Fiddich hanging around too but I've yet to open it. Once I polish off the MacAllan I'm sure I'll delve into it. The problem is that I don't like drinking it casually. I want to keep it around as a celebratory drink akin to champagne.

If anything its more of a special occasions/traditional thing here. Im not keen on it anyway, i think your american whiskeys (bourbon) are a nicer taste. Whiskies like jack daniels have a smokey taste from charcoal

To be brutally honest theres not much alcohol i actually like to drink (except cider but i dont think america is big on cider) nobody actually enjoys drinking they enjoy what the drink does to them

It's my dad's drink of choice. I got a taste for it young (like I'd steal his cup when I was 3 or 4, or make him spill it so I could lick it up... ... ...) but I'm not much of a drinker now. I appreciate the drink, but usually if I'm drinking it's beer or wine. If I could afford a good bottle of Glenfidditch or the like, I'd drink it more, but it's not cheap.

I just bought my dad a bottle of Monkey Shoulder for father's day. Great stuff. I'm a big scotch fan, blended or otherwise, I'm not too fussy or pretentious.

I like Famous Grouse, Johnny Walker Black, Monkey Shoulder a lot. Blended is often more palatable, but single malts are more interesting and varied. I don't think you should pay much more than $50-60 (AUD) for a bottle, because of diminishing returns; similarly, I never buy wine more expensive than $30, and rarely more than 20. You don't get what you pay for when you get expensive stuff, I find.

Anyway, scotch is great. I like it better than bourbon, which is too sweet for me. Scotch is nice and savoury. Nothing wrong with a bit of burn as well.

My girlfriend is scottish, and she loves the stuff. Got me into trying some different ones, and she's going to show me some distilleries around January next year. I suppose my point is it's not universal.

I like bourbon better, but I will drink both scotch and whiskey.
