Screaming in music is a bit of a speciality and acquired taste, as I've found personally. I used to hate it. I found it obnoxious and unnecessary. But then it just grew on me, and now I absolutely FUCKING love it. It gets my blood pumping like nothing else.

I find it to be a pure and raw expression of emotion. It's like hearing the voice of your own subconscious, expressing your emotions in a base and visceral form. Screaming is a universal expression of feeling and one of the most psychologically affecting sounds.

This may just be because I'm a loose, angsty teenager with a liking for metalcore and the heavier stuff, but I genuinely think screaming has an important place in artistic expression.

What do you think? How do you feel about screaming? Do you think it has a place in music, or is it just noise? Leave your thoughts.

And I'll just leave some of my favourites here as examples ;)

EDIT: Or maybe I'll just leave a bunch of white squares. Seriously, why the hell doesnt the Escapist have a code list anymore?

None of your videos seem to work.

Anyway, I enjoy it when it's appropriate. I don't like it when it's overused and I prefer it when it's done with proper, real emotion, because it's so painfully obvious when it's not.

Bruce Dickinson's screams are golden.

That is all.
No seriously, shivers up my spine when ever I hear him live.

Learning how to scream and growl and stuff seems like such a waste to me. If you have the potential to become a talented singer, why ruin your throat by screaming all day?

Depends on who does the screaming. Udo, Halford or heavy metal in general? Hell yeah!

Sometimes it sounds horrible because it doesn't fit the song at all and the singer isn't very good at it, you know the ones where they just put it in for the hell of it.

Other times, it's done pretty well, and I enjoy it.

Firmly in the I love it category, I listen to and love at least a bit of every kind of music. In my opinion there is a song in every genre for everyone, somewhere. So I refuse to hate on any genre because of that.

Anyway, screaming in songs is fantastic, high pitched to low growls tis all good.

It really depends. Bands like Bring Me The Horizon makes me want to rip off their faces and kick their balls in, while bands like August Burns Red I fucking love.
this, i want to rip off BMTH's faces, kick their scrotums and then feed their intestines to a cat, but i like Dope and Breaking Benjamin aren't bad either. It really depends on the song, how and when there is screaming and wether or not the screamer is an emo *****

Screaming is a perfect substitute for being actually able to sing.

Seriously though, it could be done well, but generally isn't. This applies as much to singers who restrict themselves to singing, though.

I don't like the 'death metal' variant of screaming. But when it doesn't sound overpowered and doesn't make me want to rip out the vocal chords of the offender, I don't really mind. As long as I can hear the music I'm fine with it.

If it does ruin the persons throat they aren't doing it right, there's a difference between proper screaming and just shouting...

I listen to a lot of hardcore, hardcore punk, metalcore, deathcore etc so at least 50% of the music I love has a lot of screaming or shouting vocals in it. I love it, it's raw and powerful and fills me with adrenaline. I, myself, am actually quite a good screamer. There's nothing better than screaming along to Every Time I Die or Trash Talk while bombing it down the motorway.

One of my all-time favourite bands: (they're hardcore so the vox aren't technically screams, they're shouts)

Screaming in music tends to ruin the song for me with very few exceptions. I tend to enjoy instrumental versions of that kind of music, but I don't enjoy screaming at all.

I see. Even so, it seems like a waste of time to learn how to scream well when you could learn how to actually sing well.
