Maintain the core of the series, but don't be afraid to bring something new to the table. Improving technically (better performance and stuff) is a must.

I generally prefer narrative continuity, but that is not required.

What I like in my sequel all depends on how good the first game was.

If the game from that franchise (let's say Dragon Age Origins) that I really like, I want the sequel to continue the story from the first one and improve on the mechanics of the first game. Unfortunately, Dragon Age 2 wasn't a proper sequel, but I have high hopes that Bioware won't disappoint with Dragon Age 3. Time will tell...

A good sequel that continues on from the original is Infamous 2.

A good sequel that is set in the same universe is Final Fantasy II through to XII

A bad sequel that is set in the same universe is Dragon Age 2

For games with a story, I would like for a sequel to continue the story in some way. Overall, I'd like for a sequel to:
- Improve on the mechanics of the first
- Work well as a standalone game (it can have a recap of the story, but the player shouldn't have to play previous games to get caught up unless they want to)
- This doesn't apply as much these days, but I'd like for it to have improved graphics as well.
