sequels get alot of criticism because there are so many now, but i think sequels can add to the gaming experience if they are done right. A good story, interesting characters, good gameplay, and knowing what to change and what to keep can make sequels very good.
i personally believe one of the best companies in this area is Blizzard

your thoughts?

EDIT: out of curiosity, whats your favorite game series and why? what did they do right?

I don't mind sequels in the least. I do mind them if it is painfully obvious they are trying to make a buck and the developers have no heart to put into it. Sometimes, visible effort is enough to buoy a lackluster product, like SH: Homecoming.

In some games NEVER. Never for Unique JRPGS, but they're fine for FPS's. I get sick of the massive series' though. (*Tomb raider*)

Without sequels, there would be no Half Life 2... there would be no Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (my favorite game)... there would be no Metroid Prime... there would be no Oblivion... there would be no... well... you get the idea.

Many of the best games are sequels. There may be plenty of shit out there, but it's worth it for the good ones.

Plus, there would be no Halo 3 to teach us "what not to do".

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't hate Halo 3. But they did it wrong.

Sequals are good as long as they are made to continue a good game. Sequals become extremely annoying when they become nothing more than a means to milk the industry for money.

Diablo 2 is proof of that.

Metroid Prime itself really should be categorized as a remake than as a sequel.

exactly my point, we can only pray that the upcoming Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 hold true to this

What? Metroid Prime isn't a remake in ANY sense. It's a reimagining. Maybe spinoff is the term you were looking for?

Video game sequels are not nearly as big of a problem as the gaming media tries to portray them. Most of the time sequels have many improvements of the original, sometimes much larger budgets.

A lot of people scream for new IPs, but new IPs don't sell well and for the most part filled with bugs and poor gameplay decisions. Those that survive the first game become more fleshed out in the sequels. Very few games will the original be the best one outside of drastic changes to its genre

While there are some problems, namely cliffhanger endings, it's not like movie sequels ware 9/10 are done with 1/10 of the budget of the first just to sell the name

Sequels to games you love can be great. MGS is a stellar example. I think some sequels don't turn out so well but as long as they retain what you love about the game, build upon it and have a good story then I'm all for sequels. Drastic changes rarely work, one case that it did work it RE4 but that is a rare exception. What I don't like about sequels is when they don't do enough extra, they just hang on the laurels of past success. So it can work both ways, but if they are done right, sequels can be excellent and even better than the originals.
