If one of the partners (always the woman) isn't at the age of consent, it's statuatory rape. Even if they're 17 years, 11 months, and 364 days old.

But to be on topic, yes this is crap.
17 yrs, 11 mons, 364 days is basically around 18 yrs, 10 mons, 30 days. But thats just me bein pedantic.

I reckon the actual "victim" should have a large sway in the decision but then again.. they would just end up as a target for intimidation and therefore a chance to get let off with it.

I think it does get taken too far.

In the UK you have to be at least 16 to be legal. But yeah my Mum threaten to have my charged with statutory rape, after she found out I was sexuality involved with Blizzaga19.

It's a good system that falls to shit when parents get involved.
It's a shame your friend got that coming up on a background check,it's not fair when it happens to genuinely guilt-free people, espically over here so many of the bastards get to walk.

I don't think he should have waited for the girl to be older, she was more than old enough to make the concious decision, her choice.

Just like you said the dad was a dickhead

Well I'm honestly not sure. This isn't a matter of taking a good idea too far, this is a matter of our government covering everyone in a law, no exceptions, regardless of the people that are the exceptions. In other words, it's a good idea, but this example of an embodiment of a huge problem with the law.

I think appeals to the registry should be reviewed by a committee or something. If someone took a look at this and had the power to change it, any moron could see that it only makes sense to keep the guy's name off. But the point is, it's not a matter of taking it too far, it's just that our government is too lazy to take the time and effort to actually look into things, so they cover it all with blanket laws and screw a lot of people over.

There's a lot of ridiculous offenses that can get you put on the sex offender's registry. For instance, public urination can get you put on it in some states.

Common sense needs to be a part of every law. Too bad it rarely is.

I agree, there should be a way to appeal a listing, but once someone is one it (at least around here) they are on it for life, no way off, that's why mate is fighting so damn hard, otherwise he's locked in forever.

Anyone remember that?

That kid almost ended up on the sex offenders register for slapping a girls butt. He spent several days in a juvenile detention centre and was subjected to intimate body-cavity searches by grown men, none of whom were ever charged with anything.

The sex offenders laws are bizarre.

This actually happened. I read the article but don't remember when or where.

Two teenagers were doing the horizontal mambo. The female's parents caught them and pressed statutory rape charges on the dude. The dude's parents while willing to punish their son thought this shit was a bit much. The spoke with the chick's folks but it was to no avail. Things broke down in such a way the the guy's parents thought, "You know. That act takes two." so they pressed the same chrages on the female. Now both kids have sexual related criminal charges on their record and are registered sex offenders because their parents are complete fucktards.

My thoughts are that registries are a good idea in theory but are out of control. There needs to be clear definitions of what gets you on the list. Teenagers boning? No...not on the list. 30 year old getting handsy with someone under 18 years old.....yes, that puts you on the list.
