I've been dabbling in the SMT franchise a bit lately, namely Persona 3/4 and Digital Devil Saga and while i love how tight and rewarding the DDS battle system is, Persona has been the series to keep my attention most. The setting of most of the SMT games i've seen have just been very drab and uninteresting to me, even with good characters, and something about Persona is very welcoming and easy to come back to, even with its frustrating dungeons (I'm looking at you Yukiko's castle).

This is like asking the average American what is their favorite Japanese Food; most of them will say Sushi because they haven't heard of nor eaten Katsu, Udon, Tempura, etc.

Yes I can't really answer this question fairly either; I only played Devil Survivor 1, Persona 3, Persona 4, and SMT IV.

But Devil Survivor is amazing, most will call it a Strategy RPG, but that is misleading, if technically correct. (it is an RPG, and it does have turn-based strategy)

When most people think of Strategy RPG, they're going to think of Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, and Jeanne D'Arc.

Those games have far more in common with each other than they do with this game. The best comparison is in fact frikin Total War, in that there is a turn based strategy, but then there is this battle with a completely different gameplay.

Devil Survivor is a grid-based turn strategy, but when you engage an enemy it turns into a turn-based RPG with its own version of Press Turn. Cool.

I also love the story; it really made you feel that YOU are actually doing things for the plot, not oh some crap happens to you and you save the world. The hard rock soundtrack kicks ass.

Well, I know I don't like Persona 3. The primary reason for that is the fact that I realized early on there is a optimum solution to the time/social management minigame, leading to a situation where I continuously over-micromanaged every instance of the out of dungeon experience. I haven't really tried Persona 4 yet due to the entire game being spoiled to the nth degree over the internet and until I get my 3ds upgraded to an XL model I'm probably not playing SMT4. I've played SMT Imagine, which was an interesting MMO experience while the story lasted.

Yeah, I don't really know which I'd prefer over the other, but if SMT has less micro-managing relationships then it's probably going to be SMT.

I'll rate mine, the Personas, then the strategy JRPGs, Everything else, Then last the First person dungeon crawler ones. There just isn't much to stand out in the First person just move from one dungeon to the next dungeon crawlers >.>

i prefer Persona because of the higher emphasis on story over exploration, but i still find the stories in Persona to be incredibly boring, though i think it mostly has to do with the favt that the main character is an SP, for some reason i can't stand SP's and i really have no real reason to give anyone that would satisfy them. i think it has to do with character development, and for the simple fact that it feels odd to me, especially when you know that the main character has his own personality, and in Persona 4 he does have a voice that can speak out, so i want to hear what he says. in the end, all i know is that i'd rather play a terrible game with a terrible voiced protagonist, than play a good game with an SP, and so far that has been the case.

The main series, largely because Nocturne/Lucifer's Call is my favourite ever game.

The Persona series is actually my least favourite SMT sub-series, though I still love them (well, except the first one...). I find the calendar system in P3 and 4 inflates the lengths of the games beyond reason; I was clearing eachg dungeon/block within 3-4 in game days, yet I had to wait a month for the story to advance. In the end, both games took me 100 hours to beat, but it didn't feel like they had 100 hours worth of content. And the social links seem cool at first, but the fact that there's correct choices for advancement and only one path to go down is a little annoying. I'd have preferred fewer links with branching paths. And maybe not have every single one of them being about the MC solving their crippling life problems then having them fall in love with him (if female).

Also, with the a few exceptions, I'm not fond of P3 and 4's soundtracks (or the PSP soundtrack to Persona 1, though the PS1 OST kicks ass). P3's January town theme and the final boss theme are awesome, but the Burn my Dread, and the P4 battle theme are almost unlistenable to me. I just don't like that kind of music at all.

That makes it sound like I hate them, but I don't. They're fantastic games, but the main games combine far superior gameplay with storytelling I find more interesting, better atmospheres and far, far, far better music.

Persona 2 is great and has my favourite story and characters out of all of the Personas and MAYBE the franchise (certainly characters, unsure about story). The gameplay, however, is very antiquated and wasn't that fantastic to begin with. It gets better as you progress and unlock more Personas, especially since every character can switch as opposed to just the MC, but some may feel it's too little too late by then. Persona 2 also has a fantastic OST. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3pDwxdAWHY

Digital Devil Saga is great, too, but the story doesn't really get going until the second game, imo, and though it retains the awesome battle system from Nocturne (and even refines it by not causing a game over upon the MC's death) the lack of demon recruitment and less interesting dungeons hurts it in comparison.

I'd have to go with the original series, especially strange journey, i actually kinda hate the newer persona games. They just seem so pandering to me remember when persona 2 had you fight (not)hitler? I do. Shit the one really cool, creative, risky thing in 4 was made non cannon ( for spoilers sake i'm not going to say what it is but it's big and involves teen sexuality) for a reason i just can't wrap my head around!
I'm sorry but could you explain what it was that was made non canon? I can't think of anything involving sexuality that they've officially said isn't canon.

It's probably the Naoto/Kanji thing. IIRC they get together in the Anime, but in the games it's never more than implied. Shame really; their arcs were great.

OT: Mmm. That's a hard one. On the one hand I love the characters from the persona games, but on the other hand the atmosphere and incredible settings of Nocturne and DDS really sucked me in. I'd have to say that SMT is my favorite, although paradoxically I do prefer Persona 3 and 4 as individual games to anything in SMT.

I like Persona, but it's heavy on the micromanagement, so I prefer the more traditional entries like the main series, Digital Devil Saga and Devil Summoner.

Digital Devil Saga is my favorite though.
First post mentions my favorite RPG of the last year, well played good sir, yeah I'm late to the party but got DDS 1 and 2 cheap online after playing persona's 3 and 4, wondering what the other smt's were like and adored it, 1 especially with the environments, mood and music

On topic, I've only played persona 3 and 4 (got those late 2012 on recomendations from friends) and Digital Devil Saga so I cant comment too much, what I will say from what I've seen persona is more modern and grounded, about relationships between people in the modern world, for that reason it inch's out digital devil saga as far as preference goes because the character relationships hooked me to those games

I don't prefer one over the other so much as I like some SMT games more than others. Of the games I have played I'd rank them as follows:

1. Persona 4
2. SMT: Nocturne
3. SMT IV
4. Persona 3

I love the concepts behind both, so I can't really choose one over the other.
