Ok, everybody here (at least I hope everybody) should be reaching, or have already reached, the point where if they see another bout of playground fisticuffs over which console is better they want to throw their mouse through their monitors.

My question to those people is this: Would the games industry be better off if Microsoft and Sony (Nintendo have wisely avoided this generations war) partnered up to create a console that was the only one on the market?

What about Nintendo?
And no, because we would have less of a diversification of games.

no because that would be a monopoly over Nintendo and PC if the two companies merged, and during the court disputes (which could be anywhere between 1 month to a year) the games would come out at a much slower rate for the PS3 and XBOX 360, and the games would most likeliy suck because the best Ideas were held out For the Play-Box super thing they're making

NIntendo are not interested in the console war (as illustrated by the development of casual games and their machine not being 'next gen')

The PC and Nintendo would arguably get more support as Microsoft own DirectX which all modern PC games use and Sony/Msoft wouldn't need to worry about the casual gamer so Nintendo corner that market (even more (plus they have enough of their own IP's to satisfy the hardcore))

The diversity wouldn't be effected too much as most original franchises come from third party developers and their development costs come down due to only having to program for one console.

It's not going to happen though.
That's the beauty of a hypothetical argument.

Heres the scenario.
Microsoft teams up with Sony, therefore double profits.
Sonysoft buys out Nintendo.
Micronytendo put the tripled workforce into making the best games ever.
PC gaming is eclipsed(more proof this will never happen)
Micronytendo charges $1,300 for their new system and $200 per game.
Buyers think, "Screw that, I'm gonna buy a Wii inste-- aw shit..."
Monopoly.
Gaming Economy (and gaming as a whole) goes directly to jail, does not pass go, nor collect 200 dollars.
