What?! You mean children may have seen breasts or genitals on the television?!

It's just nudity. I mean, seriously. It's the human body. There shouldn't be anything offensive about it; we all have the same parts flying around. It's nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. I really think folks need to get over this paralyzing fear of human anatomy.

To me at least, I think it's connected to pretty much everything American parents do with "protect the children" in their mind. People don't let their kids be kids, or figure out things on their own. This is just an extension of that. Yes, six year olds shouldn't watch porn, but if you can just write off partial or implied nudity, you can help develop them into understanding it all.

I don't think I'll ever understand the aversion to nudity in American media.
Yeah, this is pretty accurate. Violence, no problem. Sex? KILLITWITHFIRE!!!

French toast? I guess now that Bush II is out of office we no longer have to call it "Freedom Toast".

Yes, I kid you not. For years there some of the local restaurants served "Freedom Toast" because the French were apparently the root of all of America's evils according to some of the government's neo-con idiots at the time.

It's enough to make a politically independent person like myself cringe out of sympathy for the Republican who aren't insane.

OT:

I've got to admit that I don't approve of shows showing nudity without at least a parental warning. Kids are hammered with sexuality far too much at far too young an age for them to begin to understand the implications of what many of them--being children--pick up and imitate.

There was even a study that caught nation wide attention that revealed that girls as young as 6 years old were trying to be "Sexy", even though the girls didn't have a real clue what being "Sexy" meant or could lead to.

Jokes about prudes and prudishness are one thing. I enjoy them, too. But this isn't funny.

Thats more about presentation then content.

To me, Americans in particular and "western" society in general has a pretty fucked up obsesion with and aversion to nudity/sex. Every music video must have bikin clad women gyrating, but even a presented in a nonsexual context nudity is not acceptable. It boggles my mind.

Oh god...the human body! Even though everyone has the same parts, let us hide them from the children to protect their innocence! In fact, put on an action movie. That good old-fashioned violence has always helped kids.

This is why America and American companies have always confused me. Sex/the human body are terrible things, but blood and gore? That's fine! (Don't believe me? Go to Wal-mart and look at the dvd section. This is the store that has nothing but edited movies, but gore covered horror movies are on full display)

(and before someone points this out, I am actually an American. I just tend to avoid all the stupid that comes with the stereotype)

WE WILL DO WHAT THE F*** WE WANT! i swear... just about every show on HBO shows some form of something taboo or risque lol.. and thats per show! so much for waiting around until midnight for the porn ads to come on television its now.. lets just watch some True Blood or Game of Thrones or Californication!

It's all about perspective. What networks were being used for this study? If we're talking free network TV - ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, there's little to no nudity there. Moving up to TNT, FX, Syfy, and USA, there's shows like American Horror Story and Lost Girl that are always rubbing against the boundaries of what can be shown and said on those networks, which I love btw. AHS wouldn't be what it is if some of the scenes didn't creep you out and make you physically uncomfortable at the same time. Now, moving up to premium movie channels, anything goes. Sex, violence, sex and violence, drunk caroling while perched like a nude Cap Morgan (Spartacus), brother on sister (GoT), mother on son (Boardwalk Empire), it's all there in color-corrected high definition. If parents can't monitor their kids on these networks, maybe having kids was a bad idea.

BTW, that last paragraph makes no sense to me. Is it basically saying "a vag is a vag even if we can't see it but can see the area around it"? Really? Shows are being judged based on the imagination of the person watching it? What if the audience has a pony fetish and sees Pinkie Pie whenever there's a pixellation or well-placed shadow? Oh and...

Sure this is a problem, but ask yourself, is this a problem caused by nudity on TV or is there something else causing it? Seeing that there are beauty pageants for kids might be a more relevant factor seeing as that actually teaches kids that they are supposed to look sexy and how important beauty is. Seeing nudity being more accepted in other countries and the problem with kids thinking they need to look sexy isn't that much higher there's no direct factor.

Analyzing this kind of information is pointless by just using statistics. There have been an increase in tsunamis in the last 2 centuries and a decrease in the number of pirates thus pirates prevent tsunamis. Maybe nudity on TV is the cause, but it's lazy to blame the first option that comes to mind without doing any research.

I'm pretty sure those How Mow Sexuals have something to do behind it. By showing the other sex, our children will become over saturated and turn into How Mow Sexuals. Damn you, How Mow Sexuals !

It may just be my sleep-deprived brain here, but I'm confused. Do they mean that shows were displaying full-on explicit nudity for all to see, or the character was assumed to be naked and the camera was 'cleverly positioned' so as to not show anything 'inappropriate'? Because I know that shows like Scrubs, House, Grey's Anatomy, hell, even Firefly have done the whole wonky camerawork thing.

If nothing is being explicitly shown, then I don't see how this could be a problem in the first place. I mean, hell, the internet is far more convenient for seeing that stuff anyway and it's a lot more widespread than it was ten years ago when I first saw a naked woman on the internet.
EDIT: Which, incidentally, was from a pop-up when I had gone to GameWinners to look up hints for Banjo-Kazooie.

No poll option for cupcakes? There is always room for more cupcakes on tv. Wait we're talking about food right?

Can US please introduce a watershed on tv, that way these parents can't complain about their precious fragile children are being corrupted by sexual imagery and the tv networks can still show all the sex and violence they want after the watershed.

Honestly I get that people don't want children exposed to tv that will make there kids feel like casual sex is the norm but we really need to get over our fears of nudity. A naked body does not need to be sexual and it really doesn't hurt anyone. What we really need to do is help kids understand the responsibilities of sex rather than get scared of what is natural.
