So I recently got Dragon Age: Origins off Gamefly in an attempt to find anything that isn't a shooter to keep me occupied. It is a case of shooter burnout, I like shooters but I have played too damn many and given how many shooters there are that is not hard to do. Not that it is all bad. Out of this, Dark Souls has become my favorite game of all time. But I wonder, anyone else suffering from this?

Edit: Disregard the third option, making the poll f**ked up.

Personally i'm just tired of Modern Shooters these days, but not shooters as a whole.

I can still enjoy a game of Team fortress occasionally without much burnout.

There's a difference in that. TF2 is more of an arcade shooter where realism almost doesn't exist at times. Meanwhile games Modern Shooters like MW3 focus on being as realistic as possible.

As for me, every year I buy the newest CoD (I know I'm a sheep, and I play the hell out of it for like 2-3 months. Then I stop and not pick the game up for a month, then only play sporadically. I enjoy the games for the new guns, and addictive gameplay, but not for it's lack of innovation. It's all the same format with just a new skin covering it up. Yet I still have a pre-order in for Black Ops 2, and i'm sure I'll repeat the cycle again.

To be burned out of a genres just shows that you want to enjoy more than one single type of game. I feel that those people who only play Fighting, RTS, or FPS games and nothing else miss out on the many gems that exist in the gaming world. So embrace your love of other genres. It's what helps our industry grow....wow I just went on a tirade lol.

No they DON'T. They focus on stupid stories written by Hollywood wannabes who can't write for shit.

I'm not even burned out on modern shooters, just CoD and it's equally shitty clones.
While I agree the stories in the single player is lackluster, I'm mainly referring to the gameplay in both single and multi player. The gameplay is what Activision tries to keep realisitic. However, let's be fair no FPS has set the world on fire with a truly stellar story. It's mainly what toys do I get to play with, where do I get to play with them, and is it balanced (never)?

That's it though, the gameplay ISN'T realistic, Crysis has more realistic gameplay, Battlefield has more realistic gameplay, CoD is all about herding players to the next setpiece so the writers can show the lackluster script that Micheal Bay turned down.
And yet CoD is THE standard that many FPS are held up to now. When it comes to multiplayer, these games that tout realism are held to the same lofty standards CoD set in MW1. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying any other game is bad, although I detest BF3, I'm just pointing out that this is the game that started the whole realistic shooter trend, it wasn't the first, but it was the one that brought it into full swing in this generation. As for the story you like to come back to, yes it's a cheesy movie script, but what shooter isn't?

I do love witty banter, and debate. Thank you for bringing some life to my evening.

Yup suffered burnout just after Halo 2 was released and havent recovered I did try MW and MW2 and got a good 12 hours play combined I think but only because I was playing with friends same with Left for Dead I got some mileage out of the first one the less said about the second the better really though any shooter especially a first person one will just pass me by now I have almost zero interest in them they dont satisfy me anymore just tire me out so I ignore them and play games I do like instead.

I can still play third person games that have a lot of shooting in such as Uncharted but thats because it breaks it up a bit I tried Gears of War but I couldnt drum up enough interest to get very far.

I did suffer a sort of burnout on fighting games and played very little for quite a while well 10 years I think but im over that now and play them a lot more so maybe the same will happen with shooters but im not sure as I never really loved FPS games anyway even if sometimes I have had great fun playing them.

I don't mind it. I'm both on the yes and the no. There are those rare shooters that come by once a while, and make something very great. Then there's CoD, all that "realism",etc. Me, i love some classic shooters. One of my favourites? The Serious Sam games. Holy hell are those fun. Alone, and even more with a friend. SS: BFE made me happy :D even though it wasn't as good as the two encounters, it was a refreshing breath of air. Overall though, I wish we could slow down a bit.

I really don't mind playing shooters just as long as it is with my friends. But I am tired of being the same gruff battle harden middle age white guy that seems to be the norm these days.

Not really. I don't play one genre of games a ton over any other, so I never really get burnout for any games.

Tired of "military shooters".

I really just hate the jingoist trend in modern games, period. I still like shooters, but it needs to have substance.

Really dislike the notion that the "military shooters" are "realistic". They are not. They're poor arcade shooters. Despite all of my disdain for this genre, I still enjoy stuff like Arma 2, even though it's more or less hardcore porn for military purists. I like it because it's a sandbox, technically impressive, and highly moddable, which places the use of your imagination above anything else. It's because of this quality that we end up with DayZ, for instance.

Shooters are definitely the most common type of game on the market nowadays, but that doesn't mean the majority of games coming out are shooters. My favourite games of 2011 include Skyrim, Arkham City, Portal 2 and Assassin's Creed revelations. None of which are shooters (sure, some of them have shooting elements, but they're not shooters per se). I agree, the abundance of shooters sucks, but that's just because they seem to get a lot more exposure than other games, and seem to make the most money. Do a bit of digging and you'll find there's much more out there.

I suffer from TF2 burnout. I've enjoyed the game occasionally every now and then since it launched 5 years ago, but I can't play for more than about 20 minutes before I'm physically exhausted of playing.

CAPTCHA: "play ball!" just leave me alone, scout... I am le tired today

I don't play shooters much... at all. I do my best to avoid shit. Still, I am a bit tired of first-person games in general. I've been playing a lot of Morrowind, Skyrim and Minecraft this summer and I'm really looking forward to getting a few new 3rd person games later this year (AC3 mostly).

Not burned out on them yet but I tend to only buy ones that are a bit different from the norm. I can't be bothered with the whole "Modern" shooter thing any more.

Resistance 3 and Bulletstorm have been my favourites this gen (unless I'm forgetting something)

Definately burned out on the shooters. I do really like shooters but I'm so bored of them by this point from oversaturation it's unreal. Resistance 3 was fucking brilliant though, and I really want BioShock Infinite, but otherwise I don't care about shooters at the moment.
