Bolt-action, lever-action and other semi-auto, preferably old-school repeater rifles. They have a nicer over-all feel to them, and they're the only ones I find consistently works in games like they work in real life. Which obviously means they're ridiculously underpowered compared to everything else. But they have that nice "thump" to them when fired, so that you can almost feel how the recoil hits your shoulder.

Also, "real" assault rifles* are a favourite of mine, when portrayed right. That is, not an SMG with lower fire-rate and longer range. Preferably they should have select fire, or at least burst/semi-auto instead of always being full-auto weapons that basically work like a LMG.

Note that this is my opinion of guns in games, not a "fact", thus you can disagree with me if you want to. Also, the games you think of may be games I've never played, so there's no need to point out to me that I'm wrong about "X game" or stuff like that. /flameshield

*a lot of weapons in games are called assault rifles even though they're often actually assault carbines. There's a pronounced difference between a rifle and a carbine, the carbine is essentially the middle point between a rifle and an SMG.

As a wise man once said: AK-47, the very best there is. When you absolutely, positively, got to kill every ************ in the room; accept no substitutes.

Need i say more?

Bolt action rifles and I go waaaay back... There's a good friend in need right there.

SMGs are a very good Plan B, if there's no dual pistols available.

Exotics usually. Bulletstorm nailed it frankly, every weapon in it was just interesting to use and fun.

Pistols for me, I can use them at any range and still win. Also I love heavy machineguns because I can fire them single-shot and with a good scope snipe with it. Used an M60 in modern warfare with a red dot sight and got 33 kills in one life, just sniping everyone far and a short burst if they were close.

Shotguns, every damn time. Nothing in gaming is more satisfying than flanking an enemy squad in BF3, then opening up on them from about 2 metres away with the M1014, and dropping the whole lot of them in 3 seconds flat.

Shotguns are more than just running around and shooting people in the face from point blank. You have to know the areas of maps you can safely use, angles, corners, and ambush spots are so much more crucial than with other guns, due to the fact most shotguns in MP games are pretty much castrated.

One of my favourite in game shotguns is the Olympia double barrel from the first Black Ops. So, so much fun, and only having 2 shots is a nice added challenge.
