Can't I have both?

...

Gonna have to go with first person on this one. Third person prospective is fun in all but my accuracy is usually impaired o_O

I'll say third. I feel like first person is too limiting. But I love both. Halo and Call of Duty, especially. Call me shallow, whatever. Ha ha.

I don't really have a preference to be honest.

Although whilst playing third person I find it extremely annoying when a character runs in between you and your own character, and somehow you end up shooting them simply because the reticle in the middle of the screen hovered over them.

|<--my char |<--other char |<--screen. How can I shoot you if I'm not even facing you?

Third usually. First person can be nice and immersive, but the pathetic 70 degree FoV (Most people have around 140) drives me up the wall.

Edit: Also most first person shooters tend to be yet another call of duty/battlefield/medal of honor/rainbow 6/counter strike clone. I'll take a Hitman, Mass effect, GTA/Saints row or Splinter Cell over that any day of the week.

If I had to choose... First Person because aiming is so much better and combat wise it's more seamless for jumping from kill to kill.

Granted Third person does give more vision not only for what you can see round corners and what you can see of yourself it doesn't offer enough immersion.

Now if I could suggest use both then we're all happy. Move in between the two as needed like some have said in Deus Ex HR.

Ninjaed in the OP. Those are my thoughts exactly. FPSes are so much more restrictive.

Gotta go with third. But only because it's been a while since I've played a TPS that wasn't Mass Effect.

First, for it being leagues more immersive. If there's going to be any kind of platforming, third, for reasons Yahtzee has already harped on.

I couldn't do without either, so my favorite is only my favorite by a slim margin.
basically this, though i find it easier to aim from a first person perspective most of the time. however, third person lets me see my character which is a big plus, and gives soo much more visual range its easier to appreciate the scenery and peek around corners and the like.

so yeah, first person is my favorite but only barely.

First person. You can't really aim in a third-person shooter.

I think third-person shooters might be better for tactical situations, where you can have a more comprehensive (although less realistic) view of the situation.

When it comes to actually feeling like you're shooting something, FPS is the way to go.

I also much prefer First-person when it comes to RPGs as well.

Edit: I'm now curious. I wish I could find out what the demographics are for fps and tps shooters are, PC/Console wise.

Where is the option of "depends"?

IMHO :

First person is better for immersion.
Third person is better for visibility and spacial awareness.

I dont really have a preference. Both work well, it really depends on what the game want us to see and feel.

I prefer first person, actually I prefer turn based isometric games, but what are you going to do? The industry will keep on churning out shooters. I am looking forward to Hard Reset though for my old school shooter fix, and Battlefield 3 for the destructible environments.

3rd-person all the way. In 1st-person, you can only see in front of you and you have no peripherals. Yeah, you see too much in 3rd-person but I'd rather see too much than too little.
But it's so immersive!

Sorry, I get told every five minutes that playing a silent marine with arms coming out of his neck who can get stuck on an inch high obstacle is somehow more immersive. Since people don't seem to understand what "immersion" is, this has become an almost autonomic response, and I just have to tease.

I'm surprised TPS is leading the polls. Honestly, when I say I prefer them, I usually get treated like I said that Osama guy is a nice gentleman or something else as horrific and offensive.

I voted 3rd person, just because off the top of my head I can think of a lot more 3rd person games I like than 1st person. Then again, that's only because a lot of 3rd person games aren't necessarily "shooters"...

Yeah, this probably isn't a fair comparison at all, since they're very different and good for their own reasons. What we could ask is which perspective game developers take, and why. Why is Half-Life in first person? Why is Resident Evil 4 in third person?

I would have to say a Third person view is better.

I've simply just had more fun in Third than First. Also, I can actually see the character that i've created.

Imagine, for instance, if Mass Effect had been First person. The feel just wouldn't be the same.

It depends on the game. Some games work better as first person; some games work better as third person. In my experience I tend to like third-person shooters better.

I prefer third person shooting as it leads to a better view of your environment and thus a greater chance of surviving combat. Though if I like it when third person shooters temporarily give you first person shooting views for when you need more precise shots, for example Metal Gear Solid does this for all of its weapons and most generic shooters at least let you do this with a sniper rifle.

Personally I prefer third-person just because it makes me feel like I have more control over the character since I can actually see what the character is doing. Whenever I play a first-person shooter I feel like I'm this weird floating gun attached to a rectangle that moves with the basic controls of a tank.

I think that First Person is more immersive and realistic. A few games are good in Third Person, but I generally like First Person.

Even right now (I know it isn't a shooter) but I am playing Forza and I just can't use any camera besides the First Person-style camera inside the car. It just feels unnatural using any other camera.
