There's just something so satisfying about fighting a million enemies or facing down a huge boss. Besides, serious shooters tend to have kinda lame weapons. I'll take a Sci-Fi Handgun or Electro-Driver over ANOTHER stupid Spas-12 tactical shotgun or Glock 17 any day.
I like to point to FEAR in this case, which is mostly a tactical shooter (except for the lack of teammates and addition of slow-mo). It incorporates "boring, realistic" guns as well as futuristic stuff.
As does Timesplitters: Future Perfect, but in that game I don't have to spend hours crouching behind desks and peeking out every now and then to blast some generic enemy mercs or whatever.

I'm not saying FEAR is not a good game. I've had fun with tactical shooters, I've just had more fun with shooters that either mix up the tactics with some frantic action or stick to more old-school shooter sensibilities. It doesn't really matter how much the weapons change if the core action is tactical from beginning to end. I did enjoy Black a lot, but even then there were a few times when the game essentially dumped you into an arena, surrounded you with enemies, blocked off your exit and left you to fend for yourself.
