Gordon Freeman running around with a Portal gun could work. It would be significantly different from all the other games, but hey, thats what Valve like to do with Half Life games. Portal and Half Life are linked, so on paper, it could work.
I disagree. The Portal Gun, outside of a Puzzle scenario, becomes overpowered. Find an environmental hazard, whack a Portal above it, and plant the other one beneath enemies' feet. You'd instakill everything.
As long as they were standing on moon dust.

Valve needs to give us closure with the Combine the same way they gave us closure with Nihilanth.

But ultimately, the whole beauty of Half-Life 2 was us waking up as Gordon without any idea what was going on. Even I can appreciate it, and I played 2 before 1, (which was frustrating when I felt like the story wasn't keeping me up with what happened, before I realized I wasn't SUPPOSED to know what was up--discovering the Dystopian situation was part of the fun).

The only problem is, can Valve deliver? Half life 2 was a great 180 twist that stayed true to its roots and delivered an amazing story. Can Valve do it again?

Assuming Episode 3 will never be and HL3 is next, then no. It looks like its heading somewhere naturally different anyway, but I suspect/hope it'll feel more like a natural progression.

Why use it outside of a puzzle scenario? Enemies on the borealises wouldnt make sense anyway.
The Combine is looking for it too. Actually, Mossman finds it and is attacked by Combine at the site.

I'm pretty sure that if they keep the rebar crossbow, they could turn it into a third person tactical shooter and I'd still enjoy it. Nothing like pinning a guy to the wall by his pinky finger.

I thought the only walls it worked on were the walls covered with the white conversion gel.

No cos we still need to find out who G-Man is, and some other questions I can't remember.

It works on bare concrete as well.

My mistake then.

Half Life had a story???

But seriously no, keep it the same as its always been, the amount of valve fans there are could literally form up a sizable army if they ever change up HL in any way, shape or form. I dont think the Metacritic servers could handle that kind of hate traffic if they all banded together

The story? No. The gameplay? Hell yes.

I'm done with doing that See-saw physics puzzle. Thanks.

Before we radically shift the plot (as was done from HL 1 to 2), we really need to wrap up the major plot points of the combine invasion.

Or at the very least let me shoot a shu'ulathoi in the face.

I really want to shoot a shu'ulathoi in the face.

... or mouth. They don't really have a~oh never mind.

then work on HL3 and change the pace, tone, setting.

No no no no no no NO!

The pace, tone and setting are what make a Half Life game Half Life.
Yeh I wasn't really thinking that through very well, what I meant to say was tie up the story of HL2 with EP3, before making ANY changes to either Pace, tone or setting.

Thats what I get for posting on the escapist whilst distracted by work :(

I would rather them finish the current storyline(s) first. It could be cool to head in a new direction but they really need a bit of closure for the story. For some reason I have thought that the 3rd episode was going to be the grand finale of the HL storyline, that might be entirely untrue though.

I don't really see the need for it, pulling the "new alien race" card again would seem a bit cheap, and episode two was really left on a cliffhanger.
