The fuck's wrong with you? None of those bands have good vocals! Haha, I'm just kidding(no i'm not). You don't have to justify why you like certain music. I don't judge bands just on vocals, but bad vocals do ruin a band for me.

i dont blame you. the vocalist makes or breaks the music. however, it does not need a vocalist to be good, but if the vocalist is bad, the whole band sucks.

You should be ashamed!

Music is better without any vocals are all.

Well, okay, that's completely a matter of opinion.

I discovered Dream Theater after heading Jordan Rudess playing and wanting to hear more things he's done. If a pianist is phenomenal or a guitarist I tend to look them up but in pop music it's mostly synth so prog rock is the only genre this really happens in for me. Drummers not so much. They're just a beat in the background I tap my foot to.

Kamelot for instance if they didn't have great vocals then iff I would burn them on a stake.

But I listen to Lucciano Pavarotti,Queen and all of that. So vocals are a big thing for me and good folky death metal with the flutes awhh that's awesome.

The most important part of an band to me is...the vocalist. I don't give a shit how good the drummer/guitarist/bassist/saxophonist/trumpeter/etc. is. I only like most bands that I like (Pearl Jam/Stone Temple Pilots/Soundgarden/Nirvana/Rush/Many Others) because of the vocalist. Hell, I don't even know some of the musicians who aren't the vocalist for my favorite bands. Seriously...should I be ashamed?
frankly it doesn't really matter, if you are or not ashamed, what matters is what you like or not and that you don't give a shit about what people could think of you.

Yes, you are clearly deviant and must be culled.

Nah, I'm joshing. It's okay.
Good recovery, you almost gave away the plan. Don't forget to bring spare clothes this time, I don't want to walk around covered in blood.

Hell no. I don't know any of the members of my favorite band except the vocalist, and I only really know that because he's a genius of everything. Who cares about their names? It's the music that matters. And if the vocal music is what you like best, then that's another who cares. I consider the vocalist to be extremely important. I can't listen to a band if I don't like the vocalist. There have been so many times where I'll listen to a band for the first time and as the song starts up, I'll be getting really into it and thinking it's awesome, and then the vocalist will open his no-talent mouth and then another band is ruined for me.

So, you only care about vocalists... yet you list Pearl Jam, contradict yourself much? :D

I never said that I have to UNDERSTAND them. I love that video. Dear god, the internet doesn't even have real official lyrics that Yellow Ledbetter, man.

OT: Thanks for the support, majority-of-the-poll. I guess we all enjoy different parts of music.

Personally, vocals come last to me, but that's mainly because that the last thing I care about in a song. I'm a musician, so if the instrumental parts suck, I can't stop hearing how bad they are, and it just throws me off form the entire song.

But I don't think it's wrong if someone thinks vocals are more important. Music is all about what you like.

Those bands are full of WIN :) plus I like some kinds of metal. Metallica being one of them.
Metallica is pretty good, not a band I specifically listen to but I have heard their stuff and it is good.

A lot of times the singer really completes the band. I'm sure Nirvana would've sounded quite different with another singer (granted he didn't sound like Kurt)

Not necessarily.
They just need to play louder so the people can't hear the lead sing. :p

Well, it's only your opinion. But mine is that you're wrong.
The vocals CAN make or break a band, but if the musicians can't play, they might as well be singing over a bontempi. If the other members of Bon Jovi (ie the ones who it wasnt named after) couldn't play - and do so awesomely, Jon wouldn't be able to swim in a guitar shaped pool filled with champagne and porn starlets.

Though there's quite a few bands that betray the very idea anyway by having vocalists who also play important instrumentalist roles. The Beatles, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, just to kickstart the list. And at the other end of the scale you have groups like Linkin Park (or any of a number of Random Guy with Acoustic Guitar and Sessionists) where the music's still quite good, but really it's all about the interplay of the two singers (or for RGwAGaS, the quality of that one voice and what it sings) and they could well just Acapella it and be 80+ percent as good.

Where then, if you like them at all, do you stand on the subject of Pendulum and their ilk? I personally think they've gone right downhill since they decided to have a near-permanent vocalist frontman, rather than the words being just another instrument in a rich lineup and largely sampled instead of the more recent unbroken stretches of lyric.

I like the bands I like because of the whole soundpicture (dont know the correct english word but thats what it is in my language directly translated). However the most recognizable trait of a band is undoubtedly the vocals (as long as its not a black/death metal band...they (the vocals) sound more or less the same).

You can "easily" replace any instrument in a band, a guitar sounds like a guitar...but the vocals are unique. Of course the replacement player has to be able to play as good as the previous member...but the sound CAN be replaced.

The most terrible example of this is nightwish pre and post tarja. Its just not the same without her. when I listen to Maiden I prefer Bruce Dickinson etc. In short: Go vocals! No you shouldnt be ashamed.
