Wow I couldn't stand HoMM V for more than half an hour, and for what I'm reading here it was one of the GOOD ones. I hope to never face the bad ones.

Yeah, like others said before me: they're not exactly bite-sized games. Plus they can get pretty tedious, even for us strategy nerds. So I also suggest you start with just one. And that one should by all rights be number 3. Fans could argue 'till the end of time if it really is the best of the series, but it's defintely one of the best. Plus it's like 5 bucks in every gog sale and has no Uplay DRM. Do get the expansions though, especially the one centered around the dungeon faction.

Starting with any game but number 1 does come with the problem that, like most fantasy at the time, HoMM does not pull punches when it comes to referencing events, heroes and places from earlier games. So should you for example start with number 3, you might want to read up on the story of 1 & 2. I'm sure you can on the might & magic wiki or something. Unless you don't mind having very little context for your grand military campaign.

Might and Magic 3 for sure with expansions.. There are just a lot of options and balance to it. If your not a fan of old school games get 5 and its expansions. The story is super cheesy, the animations take too long but the graphics look great but as many have said less kinds of resources, events and other interesting things that made M&M3 interesting.

Though I found Magic in M&M 3 less powerful and the First Aid tents/Balista useless in comparison to M&M 5

If you get into the lore from the old games you might be in for a surprise though, HoMM5/6 are in an entirely different universe.
Didn't that happen earlier in the series too, around about the 2/3 mark? I seem to remember there being something about an apocalyptic war and the destruction of somewhere-or-other (began with an E, had a lot of Griffins, I want to say Eternia but I'm pretty sure that was He-Man) that caused the survivors to head through a portal to another universe.

Of course, if you're into the lore aspects, you could always play the actual Might & Magic series. Veeeeery different, but AFAIK set within the same canon. Fun too, though I don't think I've played anything past M&M6.
Four- The old place gets screwed up by two magic swords smashing together or whatever, and the world gets destroyed. There's some continuity though, most of the plotlines follow people recovering and adjusting to the new world and some heroes from the old games crop up. The new ones are entirely separate and have their own backstory, I don't think there's any connection. I don't really think it's a great loss though, I never thought the lore was particularly interesting, it's just standard fantasy stuff and some really jarring sci-fi on top.
