The way I have to buy games is: Finish one and then buy one. So I recently finished Batman:AA, I'm thinking of buying COH.

The Price is not a problem but I'm not too sure on gameplay. People have been calling DOWII a worse COH and I bought DOWII, kinda hated it and so I decided to try out the better DOWII which is COH. So the question is, should I buy it? I'm kind of on the fence right now.

Go play the demo (easy to get on Steam) and then decide. I did, and I did not buy the game. It was much more micromanagement-heavy than I was expecting, and the micro wasn't fun like in micro-oriented games either.

If you're going to also visit multiplayer, you should probably go with Opposing Fronts or get the package with both.

The campaign missions are good and battles and units are realistic, however, the game in itself is grossly over balanced.

If you do choose to buy the game and are playing the quick scenarios NEVER EVER choose infantry! Why? Because the computer always chooses heavy armour. It's a little hard trying to juggle taking the right objectives, developing your tech and units and oh yeah maybe taking out the enemy, when all the the enemy has to do is hold onto every fuel resource then bash their way through houses and terrain in their tanks!

If the game didn't rely so much on using three different kinds of resources (which you gain by taking and holding objectives like in DOWI however taking one objective only gives you access to one resource) and if they scrapped the specialised tech trees for units then this game would be really good.

...Oh yeah I almost forgot. Fucking Steam. If you want to buy this game my friend you better find yourself something to do for the next three days whilst Steam force feeds you the game updates. Yes that's right you cannot play the game - or do much else for that matter - until steam has downloaded everything. Some of these updates took nearly 8 hours - seriously I installed went to sleep woke up and the bloody mongrel bastard was still downloading! - I found it really amusing when the second last update was an update that when installed allowed you to update the updates quicker!?!?!

This is coming from a Relic fan with years worth of DoW, HW, and CoH experience, so it might be a tad partisan. But I think you should.

The multiplayer, to begin with, isn't great. It's intense, interesting, and at times great fun; but last time I checked, Relic just couldn't do balance. After seven reiterations and dozens of updates, the game performed rather well, and vanilla CoH 1.71 was some of the greatest multiplayer I've ever seen. It was tactical, well rounded, built around soft counters with plenty of strategic choice and variety. Then, some months later, Opposing Fronts arrived, and they were back to square one. All that variety and choice was replaced by one or two feasible courses of action, and the only thing that you were competing over was the opponents respective ability to adhere to that strategy.
But the singleplayer is nevertheless a great experience. It is graphically appeasing, well designed and utilises all the tactical
micro that made for some of its best multiplayer moments. With OF and the later Tales of Valor, you get hours and hours of campaigns that are tailored with good cutscenes, some great scripts and good level design.

It really just hinges on your attitude to the importance of multiplayer. Of course, you are still able to
play 1.71 over LAN or VPN, granted that you buy and install vanilla CoH and patch it carefully.

Yeah. It wasn't as good as I expected, just sub-par. But try the demo first, and see how you like that. That should make your decision easy.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I loved it, one of the best rts games around in my opinion, it keeps the base building but also has really good cover mechanics and a good story (altho its ww2 and that tends to be pretty predictable, but you do play as the germans in some of the campaigns)

I won't comment on the rest of your post, as it's your opinion. I will say that I bought the game with the 2 expansions a couple weeks ago on steam. I didn't have to download any updates at all and it works beautifully. This might be a YMMV situation.

It's not a bad game. I'm not a fan of the resource system, but I do like the single player campaign a lot. The story is decent, voice acting and all that. It's cool how you can change many of your units after they are spawned by having them pick up weapons from destroyed units.

I'd recommend it, personally. If only for the single player part.

The balance is pretty bad, but it's still my favorite RTS. The demo gives a fair impression of the skirmish mode.
