For my anthropology class we have to write a 5 page analysis of a culture or sub-culture of our choosing and later give a presentation to the class. I'm thinking about writing it on brony culture, but I can't decide if I should go through with it.

My only worry is if there is enough information on the culture that I can fill up the 5 page minimum. Granted, I can do interviews of bronies and put that in my paper to extend it. Anyway, I was wondering what you guys thought.

edit:
I just want to make clear that I'm not asking if you like the show, I'm asking if you think the culture is developed enough to fill up 5 pages of cultural analysis .

Yeah, do it, it's really easy to find information on the Internet, and it's more interesting than most other things.

I can some up brony culture in one sentence.

Grown males enjoy pony show directed towards girls ages 4 to 11, isnt that ironic. No just dumb and their need to defend it thinking others even really care even more so.
Ouch, looks like somebody woke up on the wrong side of bed this morning.

OT: It really depends how well you think you can back up your point that bronies have are different enough to really be regarded as a subculture. I would say that internet cultrue (particularily that of 4chan) is certainly different enough to be called a subculture, not sure about bronies though.

If you do it, I will reward you with the balls (or ovaries) of steel badge. You are my hero.

I wish I had the guts to do something like that.

...two sentences....damn.
Well, that's rather rude.

OT: If you've got a sound basis for a paper, go right ahead.
Make sure you can flesh out your ideas, and it should be awesome.

If I think I can get enough information I will do it, but I'm still going to have a long explanation before revealing my topic to the class in the presentation lol

Something this strange, affecting a demographic it wasn't really intended for. That stormed the internet ramparts all but crushed the haters with love and toleration. To now have spread to all the internets corners. The massive amount of fan content that has been produced. Theres all this and plenty more to talk about. Get interviews and you'll have well over 5 pages.

Wait Bronies are a (sub)culture, since when?
I mean the only thing bronies are, are basically a bunch of adults who basically watch and love the show my little pony: friendship is magic. And for some reason they saw the word bronies are were like hey we're bros and we like ponies, we're bronies! When in reality bronies stems from the fact that it started on 4 chan and really stands for /b/ronies and MLP was started as an ironic thing on /b/ and somehow the rest of the net decided to embrace it as a serious thing.

So really not much to say, just a bunch of dudes who watch a show and have a silly group name; there really is no special culture around it.
In reality you're dealing with more of the internet subculture that is fueling the fire of MLP, instead of a unique separate culture for MLP fans, it is just another in a trend of odd fandoms on the net.

I say go for it. If Know Your Meme taught me anything, it's that there's alot to talk about when it comes to the brony sub-culture.

You could talk about the show itself, the inception of bronies on 4Chan, the various memes and inside jokes, there's plenty of content.

Who knows, you may just recruit a few new bronies in your class.

And as a fellow brony, I salute you for having the balls to talk about it in front of a group of people.

I would roll my eyes and give you a harsher grade but I'm not your professor so do whatever the hell you want if you think they'll like it

Edit: Or am I?

No because its not a culture, Liking a show and giving the fans of that show a specific name does not make a culture, subculture or anything similar.

"Bronies - People, mostly white 20something males on the internet, who like the animated cartoon show 'My little pony : friendship is magic"

Thats it, there is nothing more. I'd fail your ass just for considering it as you're clearly not ready to take academia seriously. Not just because this is an obscure topic, or internet based, but because the above reason is PAINFULLY obvious.

You might ought to consider doing it over something broader if you come up short, like the spread of memes or the influence of 4chan. Oh, and don't worry about explaining to the class; All the ones worth mentioning will understand.

Somebody misunderstood the "not asking if you like the show".

OT: If you think you can pull it off, do it. And then link it for us to read or something.

Yep, I think you could do it.

I'm pretty sure there is enough information to give you 5 pages.

I'm not certain that bronies are a subculture. Though I suppose if Trekkies and Star Wars enthusiasts constitute a subculture, then why not. Might be interesting.

I once wrote a sociology paper defining university professors as a subculture and suggesting in the introduction that the paper would be best read in the voice of David Attenborough. I included a picture of the man for inspiration. Got a high grade due to hilarity.

No. I don't think they have enough history to be classified as a subculture yet. Some people will argue but good luck filling up 5 pages with what's available.

Only if you point out that the obsession over the show for female children has caused various other factions to war with the Bronies.

While it may make for an interesting topic, it's also one that isn't likely to be taken seriously. Take that into account, along with the attitude of whomever you're turning this paper in to, and make your decision accordingly.
