Portables don't get many games and get a lot of hardware revisions. Wait for a year or two.

See, it depends on what kinda games you like. I will say this, if you're into its kind, Fire Emblem Awakening is an amazing game, the only 3DS game I own, and has highhandedly justified my 3DS purchase.

My friend on the other hand bought a Vita, and has bought eight games (Call of Duty, Dynasty Warriors, Lego etc.), a case, a grip, and a TV connector, and he still doesn't like playing it that much. He's still waiting for the "Killer App".

Just my two cents.

I find that with my Vita, it generally gets used at home. Games like Uncharted, Persona, and even the less story focused games like Army of Hell, it just doesn't seem to be that much of a travel friendly system, at least to me. Even MK which I picked up because it seemed ideal for short play sessions, it still feel better when I'm playing it at home because it can take a while to load in. Often longer than I have to play when I'm on the go out in the wild. Again though, this is just my experience and that's not to say it isn't a great handheld, especially since I have PS+.

My 3DS I seem to get more use out of when not in the home. There just seems to be more games for it that I can get into and out of quickly which make it more ideal for on-the-go gaming. There are plenty of dedicated gamers games for it too, provided you like Nintendo properties.

As has been said, it really comes down to what kinds of games you want to play. Take a look at the library for each and see what speaks to you.

Interestingly enough I've found my Vita to be the first portable system I can be bothered to take with me on my commute, or to murder my lunch break at work. The triple A games like Uncharted just aren't good for that, nor are they good for killing 5 minutes. Those are great for planes or time at home though.

The indie scene on Vita is exploding though and well worth a look if you want that portable experience from your handheld.

Particularly, with PS+ and a library of PS1 and PSP games the Vita is amazing. It's a stellar multimedia device too and really not that expensive (though a good memory card is).

The 3DS I find myself mostly playing JRPG's and pokemon and such, thus do not use it on the go very much.

Both are utterly fantastic systems but I find myself using the Vita more than the 3DS in most situations, largely because of the indie library making it great on the go and the few AA games and excellent PSP and PS1 compatibility. The PS4 will also sweeten the Vita.

Oh and the 3DS I recommend heavily if you like Nintendo properties and i n particular FRIGGING POKEMON.

Pokemon is the sole reason I keep coming back to their handhelds.

It's also worth noting that the 3DS feels much less well built that the Vita does, and is a generally cheaper feeling device, if that matters to you. For example on the XL the backplate creaks and isn't attached well at all, and this seem to be a very widespread problem. It's not a big deal unless you're finnicky. The buttons are also more spongy than the Vita's tactile clicky buttons, and I prefer the Vita's sticks to the 3DS nub. But the games are far more of a big deal.

Oh and fighting games, if you like fighting games the Vita is probably a better bet because of marvel vs capcom 3 and mortal kombat, combined with an excellent Dpad.

Actually please wait until after the PS4 has launched and see if Sony deliver on their promises, since that will really give the Vita a bump.

Well, I never had any of the Nintendo consoles, so I can't compare. Still, I own a Vita and I really like it. Soul Sacrifice is nice, Persona 4 Golden is amazing, Guacamelee is fun. Plus, it has tons and tons of PS1 games in digital store.

I just remembered another device you might be into: a psp. I recently got back into using mine after I figured out that putting custom firmware on the device is stupidly easy [http://wololo.net/cfw4dummies/]. All you have to do, is put a program in the game folder of your psp, then turn it will appear in the game section of the psp, run it, then BAM! Hacked psp. Its awesome for playing emulators of gba, sega, nes, snes, ect. The games for those systems are so small you can literally carry thousands with you. And it helps that the device is actually small enough to carry in a pocket (barely)

I own both and I personnally use my vita more.

Both are awesome, don't get me wrong. 3DS is getting an obscene amount of games this year but some of them can be considered pretty niche and are mostly follow up of widely known franchises.

Vita has a lot of good stuff coming for it too though, exclusives and non exclusives. You have the ones people will always recommend like Soul Sacrifice, P4G, Gravity Rush. Little big planet vita is also really good and stuff like wipeout 2048, guacamelee or stranger's wrath. That and psp and ps1 games

PLus stuff like Dragon's Crown or Toukiden, Ys Celceta, Tearaway and Killzone all coming at the end of the year, not counting a shitload of indie remakes.

Whatever your choice, if you put the effort to seek out games you won't regret it. Handhelds are fucking great this generation and I find them to be much better investment even than consoles sometimes. 3Ds will also have freaking pokemon and has already animal crossing and fire emblem or SMT, and each of these games can already consume ton of hours.

Like said above, inform yourself on the library from each side, you'll have a good share of stuff to play in any case.

tl;dr: whatever you do, handhelds are amazing, like fucking sweet. The best. The hypest

If you travel a lot, and for a considerable amount of time, I'd say get a 3DS. I mean if you're only traveling for like 20 or 30 minutes each way, it probably isn't that worth it. But if you're traveling for a long time every day and are that bored with your apps, it might be worth it. Right now the Vita doesn't have a whole lot going for it, in terms of games, so the 3DS would probably be a safer bet right now

It depends on what games you want. The vita has games like Urban Trials: Freestyle, Persona 4 golden, Little big planet, and a bunch of older PS1 games as well as the PSP download library.
The 3DS has games like Mario Kart 7, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Fire Emblem Awakening, Pokemon Y (coming soon) and can play the older DS games.

People bring up the Vita's ability to play PSP and PS1 games as a plus, but always fail to mention that the 3DS also has access to the DS library, and the dozens upon dozens upon dozens of incredible games that come with that.

The 3DS is cheaper, has a larger library, and more games lined up on the horizon.

If you're into Sony franchises, then get a Vita. If you like tech porn, then get a Vita. But if you want the handheld that currently offers the best value for money, get a 3DS.
Or do what I did: Get a job and has both? :D

Or more serious answers.

Pssh... get a job, he says. Who has time for that any more?
Pffft grown ups thats who. But we grown ups aren't allowed to play games.

Oh and you did kinda brush over some of the good points of the Vita, it does have a decent library in reality, it's just a lot of it is digital only and smaller PSN and indie titles and that harms it's retail potential (I think of it as a good example of why retail is still very important). Both are great systems, just one is marketed by idiots and the other is the sequel to the second best selling console ever.

If I had spare income, I'd buy a 3DS. The Vita is a slick looking machine, but it has only one exclusive game that I want (Muramasa Rebirth, which Sony would release for the PS3 if they had any fucking lick of common sense) and uses it's own memory format which I think is retarded in this day and age.

I love my Vita, but I can't hold it against people if the library does not impress them. When I look at the 3DS, there are only a few games that really grab my interest anyway, but the same is true of the Vita. I am planning on getting a PS4 in the future, however, and the remote play ability will be ideal when I want to play a PS4 game but the TV is being used by my wife or kid(s).

I'm betting the 3DS travels better since it closes up into a nice rectangle and guards the screens that way, rather than the Vita which has the protruding control sticks all the time, but if you buy a case for it, I suppose that's not a big deal.

My advice boils down to look and see what games would interest you the most and go with the system that has them. The Vita is a better system technologically from all I have heard, and I really like mine, but the game library (even with the PS1 and PSP games) is less than that for the 3DS (especially with its ability to play DS games).
