Get Fallout New Vegas IF:
* You want something with more of a wild west feel than a post-apocalyptic one
* You want more silliness
* You prefer being led around by the nose
* You don't care much about random encounters while traveling, you'd rather just get where you're going.
* You like the idea of a plot driven mainly by seeking revenge, that ends less than halfway through the game.

Get Fallout 3 IF:
* You want your post-apocalypse to be more post-apocalyptic
* You want less silliness (but not quite none)
* You like the idea of more random encounters while out exploring the wastes
* You like the idea of tracking down your estranged dad and bringing his dream to fruition, while taking a massive step towards rebuilding civilization at the same time.

Wait for a nice sale and get BOTH if you like all those things.

There are a ton of differences between the two games that I did not list. Iron sights and hardcore mode in NV, variety of weapons and enemies, crafting, that sort of thing. I left these out mainly because of mods. With mods you can add, remove, or change most if not all of these features. If you want, say, iron sights in FO3, you can have it. There's a mod for that, a very good one actually. If you think you'd like NV better but hate iron sights (I find them annoying, actually, but not enough to mod 'em out), there's a mod for that too.

I don't really think either one is objectively superior to the other. People rag on the story of Fallout 3 all the time, but I think most of those people just haven't thought through the implications of what you're doing in it. I like it better than the generic revenge plot of NV.
I definitely liked Fallout 3 but I have to say I prefer New Vegas. As for the "led around by the nose part, I'd like to disagree: in terms of being railroaded like a ************, I felt that this was more prevalent in F3.

For instance, the way in which there is basically only one faction for which you can work. Oh, sure, you can do the "Stupid Evil" route (Blow up Megaton, Carry out the bidding of the "President" etc.) but basically you're still responsible for the dumb water quest.

Contrast this to the basically free choice of factions for which to work in F:NV.

Get neither of them. Wait until New Vegas is released as GOTY, if it hasnt already, its supposed to be rather soon though. Then go out and buy both New Vegas and Fallout 3 GOTY, which at most would cost you 60 Bucks, probably less. If you get lucky with a Steam Sale, you can save even more on that but i wouldnt count on getting both GOTY out of a sale on Steam, its a 50/50 chance after all.

So yeah, just wait for New Vegas to hit the Shelves as GOTY Edition if it hasnt already and buy it together with the Fallout 3 GOTY Edition. Both Games, all the DLC for them, endless hours of entertainment.

If you however had to choose between either of them, well get New Vegas GOTY because, while i am a little biased personally for prefering it due to its closer connection with Fallout 1 and 2, the DLC is also consistent and fun, where as Fallout 3 has only 3 out of 5 DLC which are actually worth getting. New Vegas also has the deeper Story and you get more Choices.

I accidentally voted for FO3, I meant to vote for NV.
NV has better writing, story etc. I cared more about the random doctor at the start after about 10 seconds than I did Liam Neeson after 15 hours.

Yeah, free choice... after how long? When plopped into the Wasteland, you can go pretty much anywhere you want, and while the game does try to lead you on a particular route, it's extremely easy to shove it to the side and faff about, if not outright murder the plot-relevant character and effectively lose the main quest until you stumble across somebody who knows something worthwhile.

New Vegas? I want to go to New Vegas. Now what's the fastest rou- OH GOD GIANT KILLER BUGS THAT HURT MORE THAN DEATHCLAWS! Well, looks like I'll be taking the LONG way around...

See, THAT'S railroading! Saying New Vegas has more freedom is like saying FFXIII gets better 10 hours in.

Fallout 3 gives you free choice in where you want to go, but it does not let you choose factions.

Fallout: New Vegas gives you free choice in where you want to go, but it lets you choose factions.

I don't see how F3 has more freedom.

As for the "killer bugs", did you ever think about shooting them? Smacking them over the head with a pipe? Perhaps maybe sneak around them? Or, you could try to find alternate routes in mountains?

with the release of the Fallout: New Vegas ultimate edition on steam, I'm considering buying it or the GTOY edition of Fallout 3, and currently being a poor student, I can only get one, so which one gives "more value"? I know that they are essentially the same game, but is there any kind of continuation between Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, which would justify getting Fallout 3 first? or does one have better gameplay?
I know this will probably start a flame war, but I do want to know ahead of time which is worth the
money I'll be paying for it
or alternately, you could suggest a similar open-world game (yes, I have Skyrim, oblivion, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat) that would be worth my money more then the fallout series?
Fallout 3 has a better story, New Vegas has better gameplay.

I was a huge fan of the original Fallout series, and New Vegas has more ties to it, and, in my opinion, a more involved, player-driven story. Also, Obsidian didn't turn any classic characters into trees. Always a plus.

Better story and environment fallout 3

Better Game-play, characters, and more content

And by better I mean by just a little. They are both nearly the same game, but think whats a little more important to you and you'l have your answer.

PS: New Vegas had better ending

PPS: My opinion not facts

New Vegas definitely, better story, better DLC, better armor, better setting, fits in more with the Fallout series, and is all around a better game.

I've only played NV, so I voted for it. I've sunk quite a few hours doing whatever the fuck I wanted there. The only reason I did the main questline after my first play through was generally because I ended up in the area.

If you're still in love with the West Coast get New Vegas because it sticks closer to the original two game. Myself however, really enjoyed Fallout 3 far, far more than New Vegas. The Mojave is not an interesting location. It was a desert before the war, it's still a desert but the lizards are bigger.

Also, Fallout 3 has far more of the wonderful 50s charm that made old sci-fi so amazing, and honestly what made Old World Blues (Vegas DLC, also possibly the best paid DLC ever). New Vegas lacked interesting things to look at and while there were far more quests, none of them really stuck out as unique like the ones in Fallout 3.

If you don't have thick nostalgia goggles, FO3 is the better game.

Definitely New Vegas for the overall gameplay. While I personally preferred Fallout 3's atmosphere, much larger map, and random encounters; New Vegas allowed far more roleplaying options, much better shooting mechanics, Perks that actually mattered, and a subtler level-scaling system that didn't fell like it was holding the player's hand or make leveling up something to avoid. Not many RPG's allow the player to kill everyone they meet or never kill anything at all and still be able to beat the game.

I'll also add that New Vegas lets you play as a mentally retarded person who can somehow manage to win the game after slaughtering every single NPC. Sure, you'll fail 90% of the quests and bomb a thriving civilization into the dark ages, but you can still win.

The sheer number of options that occur based on your S.P.E.C.I.A.L and perks is astounding. You can play an idiot doctor who miraculously manages to remove a tumor.

Vulpes: "How on earth did you manage that?"

Courier: "I have no fucking idea."

I loved New Vegas to death so normally i'd suggest that. However Fallout 3 just overall feels better. It's the the better designed game. Since you don't own either, get Fallout 3. Its a great introduction to the series and you'll soon find yourself in love with all things fallout (assuming you haven't played the other games).

Buy New Vegas later. Both are worth the money but a first timer should just go with Fallout 3.

depends, really
Fallout 3 is pretty solid, marionette-styled characters aside, and I really like the world overall
however Fallout New Vegas has better writing, is more colorful and not so desaturated, and is more lore-consistent

so yeah, I think there's your choice
both are pretty damn fine, it's just New Vegas is more in line with the set lore from Fallout and Fallout 2
that and it has the Dead Money DLC, which is in my opinion the best damn DLC I've ever played

To me Fallout 3 had a better atmosphere, more apocalyptic setting and was much less buggy... so...

Get New Vegas, I don't know why but it was just so much more fun, seriously it's an epic (if buggy) game.

If you like dungeon exploration, Fallout 3. If you like open-worldy-ness, get New Vegas. PM me if you want an elaboration.
