I'm feeling like getting into one of these two games (I've never played either, the only mmo's I've played are Runescape and Rappelz) for about a month before I head back to university. I have a month's holiday and I'm already bored out of my brains. So I ask you fellow Escapists; which should I get and why?

PS: Please don't turn this thread into a flame war I just want to hear the pros and cons of each so I can make an informed decision :)

Well, World of Warcraft has a free trial. You could play that until it ends, and then decide.

I've never played RIFT, so I can't compare the two.

^ This, though I would like to point out (as you may have noticed from all the escapist adverts of late) that Rift has a free trial also. So give them each a go.

Oh, I'd also like to add that WoW's technical needs are waaaaaaay lower than the hardware it takes to make Rift play at a reasonable framerate.

Rift is for disgruntled former WoW players, basically - if you've never played WoW, take WoW.

Haha I haven't played runescape for years, Rappelz had multiple skill trees though so I think I can handle them. Twas one of my favourite things about that game really.

Not entirely. Just most. lol
Rift is great in its own ways. They both have trials so you can compare them both. I'd go Rift imo because the community is what WoW's use to be like. Helpful and friendly.

I've played WoW from the beginning, and I was in the beta for Rift.

Rift is... very brown. Very understated, at least as much as I saw. Oh, having what was essentially a Horde Night Elf was cool but that was quite literally one of about three things I liked about it.
The rift mechanic itself is very cool and the way the talent trees work also has the potential to be quite deep, until the cookie cutter builds are created anyway.

World of Warcraft though... there's a lot to do. An overwhelming amount. Cataclysm made levelling much more enjoyable, and with the dungeon finder technically you don't need to quest at all past the very first fifteen levels before unlocking said dungeon system. But, why subject yourself to dungeon grind before the endgame, eh?

Basically I suggest WoW.

Since you seem a bit of a vet mmo player could you give me any wow tips? I feel like that's the way I'm leaning based on feedback. For example what are the differences in the races that's the main kind of thing I feel I need some info on.

Well, I know you asked Loop Stricken and not being him is one of my many personal failings, buuuut...the only thing you need to worry about with races is which one you like the look and sound of. They all have a racial ability or two, but because this would screw over balance if it was significant these barely affect gaemplay.

Ok sweet. From my research classes seem to be more important?

Having played rappelz and switched over to WoW myself i'd say pick WoW. Rift does look great but as i haven't played it yet i'm not gonna comment on it further than that ;)

WoW. From what I hear, Rift is just kind of "meh." Then again, both have free trials, so you should try both out and decide for yourself afterwards.
